The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) is a nonprofit, community-based school of the arts that offers instruction in dance, music, theater and the visual arts to 2,000 students annually. Our mission is to enrich the lives of children through exposure to and education in the arts. Founded in 1964 by the internationally acclaimed soprano Dorothy Maynor, HSA held its first class in the St. James Presbyterian Church with 12 local children in attendance. In 1977, the school moved to its award-winning building designed by Ulrich Franzen. Today, HSA offers instruction onsite to children ages 4 through 18 from Harlem, Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut, and we serve students public schools throughout the City through our unique arts-based After-school programs. The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) seeks a grant writer to join the School's small but growing development team. HSA is a multi-disciplinary training school of the arts for young people located in upper Manhattan. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Grant writer will cultivate and solicit grants from foundations, corporations and government sources to support the full range of HSA programs. The Grant writer will manage and grow portfolio of major foundations and corporations to ensure a dependable revenue stream; build and maintain the grants calendar; develop strategies to cultivate long-term, comprehensive relationships with all institutional grant-making organizations; initiate and maintain communications with prospects and funders through telephone and written correspondence and site visits; conduct online and other methods of prospect research; write and submit letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports; and coordinate site visits. He or she will work with staff members at all levels to ensure that application deadlines are met, that proposals are of the highest quality and that grantors expectations are met; meet with appropriate staff to gather programmatic information; assist in developing project budgets and in reporting accurate budget expenditures; and provide ongoing oversight to ensure that funded programs meet grantor expectations and requirements. The Grant writer attends departmental, inter-departmental and external committee meetings; works with an administrative assistant, interns and volunteers; and prepares monthly activity and other internal reports. The ideal candidate must have a B.A. and at least five years fundraising experience in an arts, cultural or educational environment with progressively increasing responsibilities and demonstrated success in grantseeking. He/she will possess excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; a thorough knowledge of and experience with online research methods; excellent time and project management skills; and a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of Raiser's Edge is a plus. In addition, candidates should be highly motivated, detail-oriented and organized; able to plan, control and lead projects; meet deadlines; and work independently and collaboratively in a culturally diverse environment. A familiarity with New York funders and an interest in the arts are strongly preferred.
