Responsibilities: The Upper School Librarian/Head Librarian will report to the Upper School Director and will be responsible for the following duties: scheduling and teaching all Upper School library related classes, instructing students in how to effectively use the library and its materials for research and information purposes; documenting the Upper School library curriculum through the Curriculum Mapping Project; providing individual assistance to students and faculty as needed; evaluating, selecting, purchasing and weeding print and non-print material in support of the academic curriculum; cataloging and classifying all print and non-print materials to get them ready for processing; developing library programs, policies and procedures in conjunction with the other librarians; drafting an annual budget for the library and tracking monies spent; reconciling monthly credit card statements generated by the library; supervising four librarians and a library staff of three; and serving as a member of the Academic Council. In addition to these responsibilities, he or she will advise a group of 12 students, and perform periodic duty assignments (lunch, traffic, detention, etc.). The Upper School Librarian reports directly to the Director of Technology, Library & Media Services and will be part of a collaborative team that includes two instructional technologists and a partner librarian at Hawken’s Lyndhurst campus. The Upper School Library, which houses approximately 15,000 volumes, extensive periodicals/journals and video collections, serves about 425 students and 105 faculty and staff members. The library belongs to a consortium of independent school libraries and is currently connected to CLEVNET, the Cleveland public library system. In addition to our print resources, the library includes a computer lab and a number of digital resources including a large number of research databases, digital cameras and camcorders, microphones, voice recorders, and classroom response systems. The librarian will partner with faculty on delivering effective instruction that integrates information and media literacy.
