POSITION TITLE: Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA)

REPORTS TO: Associate Superintendent or Director in charge of Special Services

POSITION SUMMARY: Provides occupational therapy services under the supervision of a fully certified OT as determined by the individual education plan (IEP) for each student.

PAY COLUMN: MONTHLY SALARY BASED ON 25.00 DOLLARS PER HOUR AND 40 HOURS PER WEEK or EXPERIENCE LEVEL ON THE CERTIFIED SALARY SCHEDULE AS DETERMINED BY THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF PERSONNEL. ADDITIONAL PAY OPTIONS INCLUDE ADDITIONAL PAY AT AN HOURLY RATE FOR HOURS WORKED FOR ESY SERVICES DURING SUMMER MONTHS.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions

  • Provides occupational therapy services as determined by the individual education plans (IEP).

  • Work with the Certified OT to plan, write and implement individual education plans for students whose visual, sensory, and fine motor delays warrant occupational therapy.

  • Consults with early childhood teachers, K-12 teachers, and parents regarding student's progress and appropriate reinforcement activities.

  • Works in conjunction with other staff members (PT, SLP, K-12 Special Education teachers, Regular Education Teachers, and ECSE teachers) to meet the needs of the students, such as in sensory-motor integration.

  • Consults with ECSE teachers, K-12 teachers (regular and special education), and any IEP team member regarding visual, sensory, and fine motor development of ECSE and K-12 students.

  • Maintains attendance and progress records for students.

  • Attends IEPs, parent conferences and staffing meetings.

Physical/Visual Activities or Demands: Physical/visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • Walking, sitting, stooping or crouching, kneeling, crawling, talking, hearing.
  • Normal attention with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less as well as 20 feet or more, depth perception, and ability to ID and distinguish colors, required.
  • Light to moderate physical demand with regular lifting of very light to light (1 to 25 lbs.) items, and occasional lifting of average to heavy (25lbs. to over 60lbs.), by hand.

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • Subject to both inside and outside (playground duty) conditions.

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Broad knowledge of a discipline such as occupational therapy, involving the use of a broad theoretical knowledge equivalent to a complete college or university education. The COTA must have an associates degree or OTA certificate from an occupational therapy program which is approved and accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), or have met the equivalency education requirements for eligibility to sit for the certification examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, INC. (NBCOT).

Licensure/Certification Required: In the State of Missouri, the practice of occupational therapy assistance is regulated by the Board of Occupational Therapy, Division of Professional Registration, Department of Economic Development. The occupational therapy assistant must hold a current Missouri License or limited permit to practice.

Experience: Requires a minimum of one year up to and including three years of experience in occupational therapy.

Apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure. Perform the operations with like common and decimal fractions. Compute ratio, rate, and percent.

Perform reading, writing, and speaking at an intermediate level.

Must continuously work to upgrade own professional knowledge and technical skills.

Must possess positive, effective "people skills".

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position:

Computer and related software, "suspended equipment" such as swings.
