TITLE: Elementary School Principal

LOCATION: Mildred H. Aitken Elementary School

START DATE: July 1, 2025

REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools

QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered qualified for this position, candidates must minimally have the following:

  • Masters Degree or higher from accredited institution with a major in educational leadership/supervision/administration
  • Current Massachusetts DESE license for School Principal/Assistant Principal (PK-6)
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Administrator Endorsement
  • Minimum of five years successful classroom experience as an elementary teacher/administrator
  • Vision, creativity, and willingness to take prudent risks to promote growth in teaching, learning, and student achievement through educational management
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications that are determined to be appropriate and acceptable

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Leadership:

  • Serves as the school’s instructional leader and supervises the school’s educational program
  • Promotes a shared vision that makes effective teaching and learning the central focus of schooling
  • Provides leadership in curriculum organization, programs, instructional materials, best practices and current trends
  • Provides quality feedback on the use of appropriate inclusive practices that meet the diverse learning needs of all students, including those of academically advanced students, students with disabilities, and English learners
  • Defines high expectations for the quality of instruction, student work, and the perseverance and effort required to produce it
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
  • Makes recommendations concerning the school’s administration and instructional programming
  • Analyzes, and leads staff in analyzing, student achievement and growth data on local, state, and national measures
  • Develops, and assists staff in developing, actionable plans for teaching and learning based upon results of data analysis
  • Assists with the analysis of school and district student performance indicators
  • Assists educators to develop and attain meaningful, actionable, and measurable professional practice and student learning goals in alignment to district and school improvement goals
  • Involves stakeholders in creating focused, measurable school goals rooted in data and aligned with priorities across the district’s four schools
  • Monitors and supervises all special education and 504 educational plans and shares responsibility with the Director of Student Services
  • Makes visits to classrooms and provides quality, content-aligned feedback to all educators to reinforce effective practices and provides clear next steps and support for improvement

School Management and Operations:

  • Conducts meetings of staff, according to contract, for the efficient and proper functioning of the school
  • Sets and mandates high expectations for student behavior that give staff and students a sense of order and discipline within a caring environment and a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework
  • Creates and maintains a master schedule and related systems and practices that maximize blocks of uninterrupted instructional time across all content areas
  • Supervises and evaluates all professional and non-professional staff within the building, sharing responsibility for such with other members of the administrative leadership team where appropriate
  • Supports the district professional development process and oversees the implementation of professional development within the building
  • Recruits, hires, evaluates, and terminates, when necessary, building personnel
  • Develops and manages the school budget in accordance with the district requirements and the Education Reform Act of 1993
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge and leadership in following in school law, particularly as relates to student discipline and non-discrimination
  • Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all School Committee policies and contracts
  • Plans and supervises safety drills and an emergency preparedness program
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety of the students, staff, and school
  • Demonstrates sound professional judgment and adheres to school and or/district policies and codes of ethics

Family and Community Engagement:

  • Engages with families in a way that is culturally responsive and collaborative to ensure that all families are welcome and can contribute to the school community
  • Establishes ongoing relationships with community organizations, community members, and businesses to maximize community contributions for school effectiveness
  • Supports families in understanding school-based policies and resources that ensure student learning and achievement
  • Responds to families as concerns arise in a timely and effective manner, and supports educators to do the same in order to reach equitable solutions in the best interest of students
  • Works collaboratively with the parent-teacher organization in supporting students, families, and staff through community activities and fundraising
  • Chairs the School Council and other school level committees and oversees the creation of annual plans in these areas
  • Demonstrates professionalism and promotes positive rapport among administrators, teachers, parents, students and the community

  • Fosters a shared commitment to high standards of teaching and learning with high expectations for achievement and growth for all students
  • Continuously engages staff, students, families, and community members in developing a shared educational vision focused on student preparation for college and career readiness, civic engagement, community contributions, and responsible citizenship
  • Employs a variety of strategies to build consensus within the school community around critical school decisions
  • Regularly plans and leads well-run and engaging meetings that have clear purpose, focus on matters of consequence, and engage participants in a thoughtful and productive series of conversations and deliberations about important school matters
  • Develops and implements culturally responsive practices that acknowledge the diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges of students and staff
  • Provides staff with relevant resources to support them in building cultural proficiency and promotes a culture that affirms individual differences within our shared community
  • Performs other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Twelve-month position
  • Salary commensurate with experience and accomplishments
