POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction provides strategic leadership in the ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices across Community High School District 117. Reporting directly to the Superintendent, this role collaborates closely with administrative teams and certified staff to ensure continuous improvement, equitable student access to high-quality educational opportunities, and alignment with the District 117 Portrait of a Graduate, the District 117 Strategic Plan, and the State of Illinois School Code and Learning Standards. The position emphasizes innovation, instructional excellence, professional learning, and effective use of data to enhance student achievement. Additionally, the Assistant Superintendent fosters community and inter-district partnerships, coordinates district-wide programs and initiatives, and supports comprehensive professional development to advance district goals.

QUALIFICATION - EXPERIENCE - KNOWLEDGE:

  • Professional Educator License with General Administrative, Principal, or Superintendent Endorsement

  • Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or related field

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant educational experience, with at least five of those years in an administrative role preferred

  • Demonstrated expertise in curriculum design, instructional best practices, assessment systems, and professional learning

  • Demonstrated leadership with organizational change.

  • Effective skills in data analysis and utilization to inform instructional decisions.

  • Commitment to embracing diversity by working to ensure equitable student outcomes across all student populations.

  • Successfully completed Illinois Evaluator Training, and demonstrated experience utilizing the Danielson Framework to evaluate teachers.

  • Knowledge of state and federal educational mandates, including Title programs and Illinois Learning Standards

  • Proven ability to facilitate collaborative leadership teams and drive systemic instructional improvement

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads the preparation and revision of the District's curriculum Scope and Sequence objectives for teaching and student learning.

  • Completes periodic comprehensive curriculum reviews and audits of instructional practice for a grade 9-12 school system. Works collaboratively with the building Principals and Assistant Principals for Curriculum and Instruction.

  • Champions the implementation of classroom experiences that will help students develop the six competencies of the District 117 Portrait of a Graduate.

  • Coordinates and leads frequent class visits to monitor the curriculum implementation, instructional best practices, and the six competencies of the District 117 Portrait of a Graduate.

  • Supervises the implementation of the District Action Plan.

  • Models fluency with student achievement data and implements training to increase staff awareness and fluency with this data.

  • Leads MTSS program to support student success.

  • Leads English Language Learners program.

  • Coordinates and oversees district-wide summer school programming.

  • Leads the continuous improvement of career pathways in our curriculum scope and sequence, aligned with the D117 Postsecondary and Career Expectations Framework.

  • Coordinates with the Director of Human Resources and Community Engagement to achieve the "All Students Will" grade level benchmarks in our D117 Postsecondary and Career Expectations Framework.

  • Coordinates the Staffing & Master Schedule Timeline and owns the FTE allocation spreadsheet throughout the process.

  • Oversees and coordinates standardized testing logistics, data reporting, and analysis.

  • Leads and coordinates the development and approval process for new course offerings.

  • Implements the selection process for all instructional materials, including textbooks and instructional materials. Collaborates with the CTO to coordinate learning technologies, software, and web-based learning opportunities that coordinate with the District instructional materials. Oversees the recommendation of purchases of these materials to the Superintendent for School Board approval. Assists in distributing educational materials to schools and classrooms.

  • Assists the Associate Superintendent/CSBO in developing budgets and supervises disbursements from their respective budget categories.

  • Serves as the Superintendent's designee in crafting and writing the Consolidated District Plan.

  • Supervises the implementation of Federal and State-mandated programs, i.e. Title I, Title II, Title III, Title IV, and the Computer Science Equity grant, and the alignment of the Illinois Learning Standards, and collaborates with the Associate Superintendent/CSBO for budgetary needs.

  • Implements the District Assessment Plan, including coordination of all State and local assessments.

  • Works collaboratively with the District Technology Department to ensure the student information system is accurate and annually updated.

  • Supervises the coordination of District professional development efforts. Maintains professional growth tracking tool. Assists Building Administrators in regular reviews of professional development needs related to best practices and teaching methods that align with the District 117 Action Plan.

  • Supervises the district evaluation procedure and process (Danielson). Facilitates meetings with the Evaluation Committee regarding changes or updates to the process.

  • Supervises and Evaluates the Student Information Specialists

  • Assists the Superintendent in preparing appropriate Board of Education reports and program presentations. Attends all Board of Education meetings. Coordinates the implementation of the District's Strategic Plan and ensures State Quality Assurance requirements are met, i.e. Curriculum Audits, Title Compliance Visits, and District Policy Manual updates as it pertains to Curriculum and Instruction and Public Relations.

  • Actively seeks out alternative funding sources through grants and school-community partnerships.

  • Develops good internal communications among staff members relative to curriculum, staff development, and instructional technology. Periodically prepares external communications to CHSD117 external stakeholders.

  • Assists the Superintendent in administrative selection and review processes by participating, as directed by the Superintendent, in interview and evaluation procedures.

  • Assists with policy development, amendment, and implementation of policies and procedures within the District as they pertain to listed areas of responsibility.

  • Leads the agenda development for Districtwide Leadership Team Meetings and facilitates these meetings weekly.

  • Supervises mentoring of new administrators.

  • Assist in leading meetings with the teachers' association.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, including during classroom observations, school walkthroughs, and professional development events. The role requires the ability to travel between school buildings and occasionally navigate stairs or large campus spaces. Occasional lifting and carrying of instructional materials or equipment, up to 20-30 pounds, may be required. Manual dexterity and visual acuity are necessary for working with computers, instructional technology, and standard office tools. The position may involve long periods of screen time, meetings, and public presentations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position operates primarily in indoor environments, including district offices, school buildings, and professional development venues. The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction is expected to maintain a consistent presence in both high schools, supporting administrators, staff, and instructional initiatives equitably across the district. The role includes collaboration with district- and building-level teams, school site visits, and attendance at community and regional educational events. Responsibilities may require managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, particularly during curriculum rollouts, assessment windows, and professional learning days. Occasional irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary for Board of Education meetings, staff development events, or strategic planning sessions. Regular interaction with administrators, educators, parents, and external education partners is expected.
