Position Description

POSITION TITLE: High School Assistant Principal

REPORTS TO: High School Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification

  • Valid Ohio Principal License
  • Master's degree
  • Ohio Teacher Evaluation System (OTES) credential preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Ability to make appropriate instructional decisions based on building data
  • Thorough understanding of school operations
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to coordinate campus support operations

Experience

  • Three years experience as a classroom teacher preferred
  • Previous experience in instructional leadership

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Instructional Leadership

  1. Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs.
  2. Ensure implementation of state and district curricula and assessments aligned with state standards, including college and career readiness standards.
  3. Monitor and ensure high-quality instructional practices among teachers and staff that improve student performance.
  4. Monitor multiple forms of student data to develop instructional and intervention decisions to maximize student achievement.
  5. Ensure that effective instruction maximizes growth of individual students and student groups, supports equity, and eliminates the achievement gap.
  6. Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure that program activities are related to program outcomes and use findings to take corrective actions.
  7. Regularly conduct classroom walk-throughs to monitor progress of district-level initiatives and use findings to take appropriate actions.
  8. Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  9. Promote the use of technology in teaching/learning process.
  10. Promote and support implementation of district initiatives.

Human Capital

  1. Provide clear expectations of staff performance and conduct rigorous evaluations of all staff using multiple data sources.
  2. Assist principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.
  3. Define expectations for staff performance with regard to instructional strategies, classroom management, and communication with the public.
  4. Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences with staff.
  5. Confer with staff regarding their professional growth. Work with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals.

School Culture

  1. Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.
  2. Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals.
  3. Establish, reinforce, and monitor clear expectations for adult, staff, and student conduct, including social and emotional supports. Recognize excellence and achievement.
  4. Create a safe school environment that ensures the social, emotional, and physical well-being of staff and students. Ensure the effective and quick resolution of conflicts.
  5. Communicate effectively with students and staff.

School/Organizational Improvement

  1. Participate in development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.
  2. Help principal develop, maintain, and use information systems to maintain and records to track progress on building performance objectives and performance indicators.

Administrative/Facilities Management

  1. Supervise operations in principal’s absence.
  2. Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.
  3. Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with attendance secretary on follow-up investigations.
  4. Assist with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities.
  5. Coordinate custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
  6. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
  7. Assist with completion of federal, state, or local reports as assigned.
  8. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Student Management

  1. Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.
  2. Help to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior. (Examples: PBIS and Restorative Discipline principles)
  3. Apply a variety of student discipline techniques to meet the behavioral and academic needs of individual students.
  4. Work with staff and students to develop a student discipline management system driven by the principles of PBIS that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.
  5. Utilize the building PBIS Committee to effectively monitor student discipline data and adjust discipline management practices accordingly.
  6. Employ academic and behavioral RtI processes effectively.
  7. Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  8. Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
  2. Participate in building-based professional development as assigned.

School/Community Relations

  1. Articulate the school’s mission to community and solicit its support in realizing mission.
  2. Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  3. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES:

Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with school principal. Supervise and evaluate the performance of professional staff, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel and others as assigned.

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Occasional district-wide travel.
  • Occasional prolonged or irregular hours may be required.
  • Supervision of students may be required outside of the building and exposure for extended periods of time to various weather conditions may occur.
  • Prolonged use of the computer.
