Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia is now accepting applications for a 10-month Special Education Physical Therapist position in the division for the 2025-2026 school year.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
MCPS is seeking a compassionate and skilled Physical Therapist to join our multidisciplinary team to provide therapeutic services to students within our schools. The ideal candidate will have experience working in the educational setting and will be passionate about helping children reach their full potential through physical therapy interventions.
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following tasks are typical for a school-based physical therapist. There may be extra duties, which are not listed below, that are logically related to the PT position. Other duties may be required and assigned. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, it is not all-inclusive, and the administration reserves the right to revise the job description at any time.
- Hold or be eligible for a license with the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy
- Be a graduate of an accredited school program of physical therapy
- Possess at least one year of clinical experience in the area of physical therapy
- Possess knowledge of the abilities and limitations of students with disabilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate physical therapy interventions for a school-based setting
- Document and track student progress and adjust interventions as needed
- Documentation of therapy for public billing purposes
- Supervision of physical therapy assistant, as well as documentation for public billing and IEP purposes
- Utilize Virginia IEP and Google Drive for therapeutic planning purposes, collaboration, and managing caseload
- Create and maintain an inclusive, supportive learning environment that respects the diverse backgrounds and needs of all students
- Conduct evaluations and develop individualized education goals tailored to meet students’ needs
- Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) Meetings and contribute professional recommendations
- Educate staff and families on physical therapy techniques and strategies to support student success
- Communicate effectively with strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Collaborate with other teachers, parents, and other school staff to integrate therapy goals into the educational environment
- Maintain compliance with all state and federal regulations related to therapy services in schools
- Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in a public school system
- Experience and working knowledge of Assistive Technology as it relates to PT equipment for use in the educational setting
- Knowledge of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and IEP processes
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrate dependability, punctuality, and reliability in fulfilling responsibilities
- Demonstrate an ability to maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality
- Demonstrate an ability to multitask, work with interruptions, and work under pressure
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to the working environment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, going up/down stairs, and repetitive motions (sometimes for extended periods of time); Occasionally running may be required to keep students in proximity; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas using the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and noise. This position may require the physical therapist to lift/transfer students from one location to another, in and out of equipment, as required to participate in school activities and routines.

SALARY: $60,207.34 - $103,355.72 annually, commensurate with experience
