Position Type: Special Education Department/Speech Therapist Date Posted: 6/24/2025 Location: Suffolk Public Schools Closing Date: Open Until Filled SPEECH PATHOLOGIST GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Performs intermediate professional work assessing and delivering instructional and clinical services to individual and small groups of students with speech/language impairments; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires reading, walking, fingering and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of motor vehicles and equipment; determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions and hazards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS: Locating, identifying and serving speech/language impaired persons within designated age group; preparing and maintaining student and program records; preparing reports. Implements screening procedures to locate speech/language impaired individuals not enrolled in the public school system; Screens school system pupils to identify speech/language impaired individuals; Serves as consultant to school personnel and parents in interpreting problems; Assesses communications skills of individuals using diagnostic procedures including, but not limited to, norm-reference tests, language samples, audiometric tests, teacher appraisals, parent appraisals and student observations; Plans and implements remedial procedures to modify deficient communications skills; Prepares IEPs for current and incoming students; Directs therapy sessions including speech/language articulation, voice and fluency therapy; Consults and collaborates with teachers and monitors students progress; Plans instructional programs and preparations; Conducts and participates in child study, eligibility, screening and staff meetings and conferences necessary to comply with local, federal and state laws, rules and regulations to ensure a free appropriate education and to protect the rights of pupils; Prepares speech and language evaluation reports; prepares progress reports for students in therapy; Prepares and maintains related records and files; Performs related tasks as required. Maintains a support log. Develops and monitors Individual Service Plans (ISP) and provides services, when appropriate, for parentally placed private school students. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of speech and language diagnosis and therapy Thorough knowledge of casework methods and procedures Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal resources, programs, procedures, laws, rules and regulations; Skill in the use of computer equipment; Ability to conduct interviews, assessments and diagnosis effectively and analyze needs and problems objectively; Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, students, parents, staff and administration and the general public. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in speech pathology. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of postgraduate license with a speech pathology endorsement. Certificate of Clinical Competence preferred. Terms of Employment Salary Range: $66,000 - $108,046 (Additional $4,519 for CCC) Contract: 10 Months Employment Benefits: Employer Portion Paid Retirement, Life Insurance, Contribution to Medical Insurance, Sick Leave and Personal Leave.
