JOB DESCRIPTION: Assistant Superintendent

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Kentucky Certification for Superintendent.
  2. Minimum of five (5) years of successful Principalship.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of current curriculum and instructional trends and techniques.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

JOB GOAL: To assist the Superintendent substantially and effectively in the task of providing leadership in developing, achieving, and maintaining the best possible educational programs and services; and to support the Mission Statement of the Estill County School System.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Attends work daily, being in prompt attendance, and remains on duty as specified by the Superintendent or the Superintendent’s designee.
  2. Serves in the absence of the Superintendent as the chief operational officer of the district.
  3. Attends and participates in all meetings of the Board and its committees.
  4. Prepares and submits appropriate recommendations to the Superintendent on issues relative to the operation of support services in the district.
  5. Serves upon assignment of the Superintendent as a resource person to all personnel in the district.
  6. Communicates to the Superintendent the needs and requirements of the district as perceived by the staff and/or community.
  7. Assists and makes recommendations to the Superintendent in budget development and financial planning.
  8. Prepares reports and other documents as required.
  9. Assumes a leadership role in fostering professional growth and building staff morale throughout the district.
  10. Meets periodically with staff to resolve issues, communicate new developments and to assure operating objectives are understood and accomplished.
  11. Develops an organization and staffing plan to assure attainment of objectives; makes or recommends changes as appropriate.
  12. Assures internal controls are established, maintained and documented in compliance with State and Board policies.
  13. Assures equal employment opportunity in the hiring, placement, promotion or transfer of department personnel in all job categories.
  14. Serves as liaison between Universities and schools in the placement of student teachers.
  15. Manages the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program for the district including management and record keeping required by the Education Professional Standards Board.
  16. Coordinates the Professional Development and Learning for the district and schools including management of all funding and record keeping. Attends required state meetings in order to keep abreast of trends and best practices.
  17. Oversees and monitors all Program Reviews at the school level including K-3, Writing, Arts & Humanities, Vocational and Career Studies, and World Language. Conducts External Review Process and provides feedback to all schools. Monitors Next Steps at each school to ensure continuous improvement.
  18. Serves as the district coordinator for Comprehensive School Improvement Plans and the Comprehensive District Improvement Plan. Follows board policies, state required guidelines and timelines. Oversees and monitors schools’ implementation of plans.
  19. Administers personnel policies and develops personnel requirements forecast.
  20. Oversees and monitors the overall implementation and professional development of the Professional Growth and Effectiveness System for the district.
  21. Updates the district’s Certified Evaluation Plan as needed in coordination with the district’s 50/50 Committee according to all state regulations.
  22. Assists administration and teachers in the development of an aligned curriculum according to state standards.
  23. Coordinates Site Based Decision Making Councils (SBDM) by providing support and training. Completes reports required by the Kentucky Department of Education. Attends required state meetings for SBDM Council Coordinators
  24. Maintains confidentiality of students and/or staff.
  25. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Days and salary pursuant to district salary schedules.
