About the position:
Bay Ridge Prep seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated Speech-Language Pathologist to work with Grades 9-12 students enrolled in our support programs. Our Bridge and Achieve programs are designed to address the needs of students with diagnosed learning differences and offer a specialized learning environment for students who are generally in the average to above average range of cognitive functioning in either language abilities or nonverbal skills or both. These students have demonstrated significant weaknesses in one or more of the following areas: language abilities, memory, attention, perceptual-motor skills, executive functioning skills and/or academic areas. The specific deficits can affect one or more of the following areas: the ability to decode accurately and fluently, read with comprehension, encode words, write, organize work or belongings, or engage in mathematical computations and/or applied problem solving.

The SLP will collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff to promote language, reading, and writing development of students with learning differences. Treatment targets include receptive and expressive language, executive function, reading and writing.

Specific responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Teach literacy classes for students with learning disabilities who need continued instruction to further develop their reading and writing skills.
  • Provide direct instruction to improve executive function skills in small classes (2-4 students).
  • Help teach cognitive strategies and coordinate with other teachers to help these skills generalize to the classroom.
  • Support classroom instruction in small group and individual contact by helping students complete papers and projects and prepare for exams.
  • Provide students with accommodations (e.g., reader, scribe, extra time, etc.) as stipulated in their IEP or Section 504 Plan.
  • Engage in individual sessions with select students as needed.
  • Work with Bridge Program and Achieve Program staff to create appropriate goals based on each students unique reading and writing strengths and needs.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the interventions through regular progress monitoring.
  • Participate in meetings regarding students in the Achieve Program and Bridge Program as well as faculty meetings.
  • Serve as a mentor to select students in the program.

Requirements

  • New York State Licensure in Speech-Language Pathology
  • ASHA Certification (CCC-SLP)
  • TSSLD Certification preferred
  • Masters Degree in Speech Language Pathology
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, problem-solving and achieve results. Willingness to learn and adapt to a new environment.

Duties and responsibilities include:

Students (Teaching responsibilities may vary depending on the needs of specific students or a division)

  • Conduct individual and group speech and language sessions.
  • Conduct progress monitoring and speech evaluations, as needed.
  • Help work with students in a support session on skill remediation or meeting academic goals.
  • Work in collaboration with academic departments to develop content-specific curriculum that meets the needs of our students.
  • Differentiate teaching methods for students and utilize varied materials to meet the needs of the students.
  • Be responsive to individual student needs when teaching and developing lessons and give thought to the organizational needs of the students.
  • Provide appropriate assignments and prompt feedback on classwork and homework.
  • Participate in preparation for CSE reviews and meetings, as needed.
  • Participate in preparation for an impartial hearing as needed.

Faculty

  • Meet regularly with the Speech and Language Department Chair and/or the Upper School Directors to discuss cases, any relevant curriculum and reflect on students progress.
  • Attend department meetings and division meetings.
  • Participate in faculty and staff development days.

Communication

  • Our expectation is that all communication within the school community is thoughtful and polite, with the intention of continuing to build connection.
  • Write, edit, and submit report cards and comments, if appropriate.
  • Write speech and language evaluation and progress reports.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians to discuss students needs and progress. This may occur face-to-face in meetings, or via email, written notes, or phone calls.
  • Communicate with outside therapists, tutors, and other professionals working with our students.
  • Complete and submit recommendations, evaluations, and other requests for information about students.
  • Work to ensure clear communication with families, psychologists, therapists, and other outside providers. Seek support when necessary.
  • Plan for and participate in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Act with integrity and address all conflicts in a professional manner.

Work environment and Physical Demands

This job requires the ability to maintain the physical capacity required to navigate the school environment and to ensure the safety of the students. The ability to open filing cabinets and bend or stand for long periods of time, as necessary. Classroom locations vary based on student schedules and staff may need to teach from different rooms. This role routinely uses standard classroom and office equipment such as computers, phones, electronic devices, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc. Travel between school buildings is necessary on occasion, scheduled with advanced notice, and are within walking distance from each other.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, ten-month position that follows the academic calendar. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm; faculty meetings occur on Wednesdays from 2:50 pm to 3:30 p.m. Evening work (e.g., Parent-teacher meetings) may be required as job duties demand and will be scheduled in advance.

  • The salary offered to the finalist for this position will be determined by several factors, such as departmental budget, qualifications, experience, education, certifications, area of expertise, and training. The stated salary range for this position reflects the schools good faith and reasonable estimate of potential compensation at the time of posting.
