This position services students at schools within the Hawaii District as needed and assigned by the West Hawaii Regional Special Education Office. T he authorized level of this position is Speech Language Pathologist IV . Applications are being accepted down to the Speech Language Pathologist I I in the event of recruiting difficulties. Salary Range: All new external applicants will be placed on the initial step of the salary range. However, placement above the initial step of the salary range will be based on special characteristics and critical needs of the position, an applicant's exceptional qualifications, the availability of funds, and other relevant factors. Such appointments require prior approval. Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed on the salary range in accordance with Department regulations.
Speech Language Pathologist II, SR-18: $5,417.00 - $5,967.00 per month Speech Language Pathologist III, SR-20: $5,888.00 - $6,469.00 per month Speech Language Pathologist IV, SR-22: $6,222.00 - $6,917.00 per month
  1. Plans, develops and coordinates various programs;

  2. Arranges for clinics;

  3. Provides therapy;

  4. Consults with personnel in allied fields;

  5. Administers a variety of speech-language assessment instruments and interprets test results in conducting diagnostic evaluation;

  6. Participates in research projects;

  7. Provides advisory and consultative services to teachers and other school officials, parents, other therapists, diagnostic team members, etc.;

  8. May testify in court to justify diagnostic or treatment procedures or recommendations;

  9. May supervise lower level speech pathologists and others;

  10. Coordinates and utilizes testing and other services provided by other departments and agencies.

Basic Education Requirement : Applicants for all levels must possess a masters degree from an accredited college or university in a speech-language pathology or communication sciences and disorders program approved by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

NOTE: If you will graduate within six (6) months of application from an accredited university and will meet the Education Requirement upon your graduation, you must provide a letter attesting to such from your department chair or university, along with your most current official transcripts . Final official transcript showing receipt of the degree must be submitted upon graduation.

*Level II, III: Although no experience is required, applicants must have met all the academic and clinical practicum requirements necessary for eligibility in the clinical fellowship program of the ASHA as specified in the Rules of the Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology in the State of Hawaii.

** Level IV: Supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted.

For level IV and above, at least one (1) year of experience must have been comparable to the next lower level in this series.

Specialized Experience : Professional experience as an SLP must have equipped the applicant with a full professional understanding of the theories, research and evidence-based practices of speech-language pathology and the proper application of practices which are appropriate to the students educational, developmental, and social needs.
For some SLP IV positions, supervisory aptitude may be required. Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; serving as a group or team leader, or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skill in work assignment; or favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
Certificate and License Requirements : For level III and above, applicants must possess the following Certificate and License:
  1. Valid Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA); and,
  2. Valid State of Hawaii Speech Pathologist license.
Driver's License Requirement : Some positions require a current, valid driver's license.

Quality of Experience : Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicants overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position for which applicant is being considered.

Salary: The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable. Requirements: Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.

Temporary Assignment: Claims of Temporary Assignment (TA) experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements must be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below:
  1. A copy of the applicants TA History Report or equivalent system-generated report;
  2. A signed letter from the applicants supervisor that includes the applicants name, his/her TA job title, the TA start and end dates (from mm/yy to mm/yy), his/her specific TA duties performed, and either the TA hours worked per week or total TA hours worked; or,
  3. Copies of the applicants signed SF-10 Forms.
