Location: Doniphan West Jr./Sr. High School Highland, KS

Reports To: Jr./Sr. High School Principal
Contract Length: Full-time, school-year contract (as assigned)

Position Summary

Doniphan West USD 111 is seeking a student-focused, highly organized, and collaborative 712 School Counselor to support the academic, social-emotional, career, and postsecondary needs of students at Doniphan West Jr./Sr. High School. The counselor will work closely with students, families, staff, and community partners to promote student success and build a positive, supportive school culture.

Primary Responsibilities Student Support & Counseling Services
  • Provide individual and small-group counseling to students in grades 712.

  • Assist students with problem-solving related to academic concerns, peer relationships, attendance, and behavior.

  • Support students in crisis situations and follow district safety and reporting protocols.

Academic Planning & Student Success
  • Assist with student scheduling and course planning for grades 712.

  • Support student academic progress through goal-setting, check-ins, and intervention planning.

  • Coordinate student support plans with teachers, administrators, and families as needed.

Career & Postsecondary Readiness
  • Provide guidance for career exploration, career pathways, and postsecondary options.

  • Assist students with college/career planning, applications, scholarships, and financial aid resources.

  • Support dual credit and postsecondary planning (when applicable).

Testing & Data Support
  • Support the coordination of state and local assessments as assigned.

  • Use data (grades, attendance, behavior, assessments) to help identify student needs and interventions.

  • Assist with reporting and documentation as required.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Partner with teachers and staff to support student success and school improvement goals.

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs.

  • Coordinate with outside agencies and community resources when appropriate.

Student Programs & School Culture
  • Assist with school-wide programs that promote positive behavior, student engagement, and well-being.

  • Support transition planning for students entering 7th grade and 9th grade.

  • Promote a welcoming and supportive environment for all students.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Follow district policies, confidentiality guidelines, and ethical counseling practices.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation and records.

  • Participate in meetings, professional development, and district initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications Required
  • Kansas School Counselor license (or ability to obtain)

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, families, and community partners

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities

Preferred
  • Experience working with students in grades 712

  • Knowledge of Kansas graduation requirements and postsecondary planning

  • Familiarity with student information systems and counseling-related documentation

Terms of Employment

Salary and benefits will be based on the USD 111 negotiated agreement and experience.
