Position Summary
The Reading Specialist provides expert instructional support in literacy development across the K5 continuum. This position serves as a resource for classroom teachers, interventionists, and families, working to ensure all students develop proficient reading skills through evidence-based practices, targeted interventions, and a strong whole-school approach to literacy. The Reading Specialist collaborates with building and district leadership to support literacy initiatives, assess student progress, and drive data-informed decision-making.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Instruction & Intervention
- Deliver targeted direct instruction aligned to the district-approved curriculum for
students in K5 identified through universal screening and diagnostic assessments.
- Design and implement structured literacy lessons incorporating phonemic awareness,
phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
- Provide Tier II and III support in collaboration with classroom
teachers to differentiate literacy instruction.
- Develop and monitor individualized intervention plans for students performing below
grade-level benchmarks.
- Support early literacy development in K2, including concepts of print, oral language,
and foundational phonological skills.
Assessment & Data Analysis
- Lead data team meetings to analyze literacy screener results and identify students
for tiered intervention (MTSS/RTI framework).
- Track and report student progress on intervention goals; communicate findings to
parents, teachers, and administrators.
- Use assessment data to refine instructional groupings and intervention approaches
on an ongoing basis.
Professional Development & Teacher Support
- Support teachers in evidence-based literacy instruction, including structured literacy
and reading.
- Plan and facilitate professional development workshops and grade-level meetings
focused on literacy.
- Support the implementation and fidelity of the district's core literacy curriculum across
grade levels.
Qualifications
Required
- New Jersey Reading Specialist Certification Endorsement Code: 3310
- Standard teaching certification
- Minimum three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience in grades
K5.
- Demonstrated knowledge of structured literacy and evidence-based interventions.
- Experience with MTSS/RTI frameworks and tiered literacy support.
- Proficiency with literacy assessment tools and data analysis.
Preferred
- Orton-Gillingham or Wilson Reading System trained
- Masters in Reading
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities are a plus.
- Experience with the data platform Linkit!.
