St Francis School caters for 174 students between the ages of 2.5 - 19 years with a wide range of complex medical needs, special educational needs, communication difficulties and severe / profound learning difficulties. This nursing team forms part of the children's community services and is an integral part of the education team at St Francis school, working closely with teachers, teaching assistants and other visiting professionals involved in the child's care. The team consists of special school nurses with the support of a senior school nurse (this post) and the team manager. The nursing service provided is 08:00 - 16:00 and runs Monday - Friday term time only. Applicants must be an NMC registered nurse (child) with experience in working with children and young people with medical complexities, long-term health conditions and disabilities. Recent experience of working in a school setting would be highly advantageous as would evidence of teaching and assessing in clinical practice. Main duties of the job To provide leadership and operational management for a team of nurses within an educational establishment, whilst maintaining effective communication within the multidisciplinary environment. To work in partnership with the child / young person and their family, in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, to promote high quality safe nursing care for children / young people with medical complexities attending school. To undertake a holistic nursing assessment and formulate a plan of care for each child / young person and provide a plan of care for those staff who have direct contact. To respond to medical emergencies and offer support and advice to the child / young person, their carers and to colleagues involved. Part of this role includes providing training and clinical competency assessments to teaching assistants who provide direct care to the children / young people in school. To support the team manager in ensuring that safe standards of medicine administration is adhered to in school. To support the team manager in ensuring that high standards of record keeping are maintained, incidents are reported in a timely manner and colleagues are supported with 1:1 meetings and are up to date with in-service training, including safeguarding.
