POSITION: Library Media Specialist
REPORTS TO: Director of Learning Services
SALARY: $56,833.30 - $84,562.11

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION: Provides all students with a rich library media environment containing a wide variety of materials that provides intellectual growth. At the elementary level, plans for and supervises the implementation of library skills curriculum.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Library Media Specialist Licensure Endorsement
  2. Degree in Elementary or Secondary Education, with related coursework in literature and technology as appropriate; MA preferred
  3. Strong computer skills.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervises all media centers district-wide.
  • Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new media center materials.
  • Assists staff in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes media center materials available to supplement school-wide instructional programs.
  • Informs staff members concerning new materials the media center acquires.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials and equipment, and instructs staff and students of the use of the system.
  • Arranges for interlibrary loan of materials of interest or use to staff as appropriate.
  • Works with staff in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of media center resources.
  • Promotes appropriate conduct of students using media center facilities.
  • Communicates a positive support of the students in their educational development.
  • Plans lessons and activities to help students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
  • Plans lessons and activities for a class studying a particular topic on the invitation/request of the classroom teacher.
  • Participates in curriculum and school reform meetings and initiatives.
  • Provides for frequently changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the media centers patrons.
  • Supervises and evaluates media center assistants in the performance of their duties.
  • Implements the Library Media Center Selection Policy.
  • Follows the recommendations of the New Mexico Library Task Force.
  • Weeds obsolete and worn materials from the collections.
  • Supervises the clerical routines necessary for the smooth operation of the media center.
  • Plan for the repair of media center technology and other related equipment.
  • Prepares and administers the media center budget.
  • Follow all district procurement code procedures and policies.
  • Maintains a current and accurate inventory of all materials and fixed assets.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs other duties within the library as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Follows ergonomic lifting practices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 25 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds on occasion), reaching, squatting, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required.
SAFETY AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS:
  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
EQUIPMENT / MATERIAL HANDLED:
Must know how to properly operate multimedia equipment including current technology.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. This position requires work to be completed in person and on-site.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of classified staff.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month year. Salary is established by salary schedule.
