Occupational Therapist

Purpose Statement

The job of Occupational Therapist is performed for the purpose of assessing student's functional physical development; planning and implementing appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impact on educational performance; and providing recommendations for accessibility, assistive technology, and accommodations. This includes collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to ensure students have the fine motor, sensory processing, and self-help skills necessary to succeed in the educational environment.

This job reports to Director of SPED/Student Support Services

Essential Functions

  • Assesses students' fine motor, visual-motor, sensory processing, and self-help skills for the purpose of determining eligibility for services and developing baseline data for IEP goals.
  • Develops individualized therapy plans and educationally relevant goals for the purpose of supporting students' access to and participation in their school program.
  • Provides direct occupational therapy services and interventions for the purpose of improving student performance in classroom activities and daily living skills.
  • Collaborates with teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents for the purpose of integrating therapeutic strategies, environmental modifications, and "push-in" support into the student's daily routine.
  • Monitors student progress and adjusts intervention strategies for the purpose of ensuring that therapy remains effective and aligned with the student's evolving needs.
  • Evaluates and recommends assistive technology and specialized equipment (e.g., adaptive seating, writing aids) for the purpose of providing students with optimal access to the curriculum.
  • Maintains detailed records, including evaluation reports, progress notes, and Medicaid billing (if applicable), for the purpose of complying with state and federal special education regulations.
  • Participates in IEP and 504 meetings for the purpose of providing professional expertise and contributing to a comprehensive educational plan.
  • Supervises Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) as needed for the purpose of ensuring high-quality service delivery and professional compliance.

Other Functions

  • Travels between school sites as needed for the purpose of serving the district-wide student population.
  • Conducts professional development and training for staff for the purpose of increasing district capacity to support students with diverse sensory and motor needs.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

  • Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesSkills & Abilities: Ability to perform complex professional tasks; communicate technical information to non-medical staff; and work flexibly in a variety of educational settings.
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of pediatric therapy, sensory integration, and IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) regulations.

Physical & Mental Demands

  • Work Environment: School buildings, including classrooms, therapy rooms, and playgrounds.
  • Physical Effort: Frequent standing, walking, and sitting on the floor; ability to lift and position students or move adaptive equipment (up to 40 lbs).

Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is preferred.

Education: Master's or Doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Current Wyoming State License from the Board of Occupational Therapy
  • Wyoming PTSB (Professional Teaching Standards Board) Support Provider License.
  • Valid Driver's License and reliable transportation for travel between schools.
