JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Occupational Therapist

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Exceptional Education and Principal

JOB GOAL: To provide occupational therapy assessment and services as a related service to enhance a student's ability to benefit from and participate in his/her special education program

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Alabama license and National Board Certification in occupational therapy

  • Experience in the provision of public school occupational therapy services preferred

  • Experience in service to students with a variety of disabilities, including students with multi-disabilities

  • Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive devices for students with special needs

  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills

  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups

  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information

  • Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457

  • Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal and local law and the Board may require

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities

  • Assists and guides teachers in observing, identifying, and referring students with suspected and identified fine motor impairments

  • Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of fine motor, visual-motor integration, visual perception, visual analysis, and other areas related to occupational therapy

  • Administers evaluations, interprets evaluation findings, writes reports, and plans appropriate interventions utilizing the findings of the evaluations

  • Consults with school personnel to adjust classroom environments, tools, and curriculum to facilitate student performance and participation in school related activities

  • Participates in the development and implementation of IEPs

  • Collaborates with teachers and other school staff members to enable a student to meet IEP goals and objectives

  • Monitors student performance within the classroom

  • Provides direct services to students either within the classroom, in small groups, or in individual sessions

  • Assists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/adaptive devices

  • Assists teachers in assessing equipment needs, monitoring, and making recommendations regarding instructional equipment

  • Adapts, designs, orders, and maintains equipment needed by students

  • Maintains and monitors records of students served by the instructional support team

  • Complies with local, state and federal regulations regarding special education records, reports, and services

  • Provides information, consultation, and assistance to classroom teachers

  • Maintains frequent and substantive communication with parents regarding students' needs, services, progress, and carryover of fine motor activities in the home

  • Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner

  • Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system

  • Cooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local school

  • Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal and local laws

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
