JOB TITLE: PRINCIPAL, SECONDARY

WORK DAYS: 12 Month (240 Days)

REPORTS TO: Superintendent and Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree or Higher
  • Appropriate Alabama Certification in Administration
  • Principal and Assistant Principal Experience Preferred
  • Teaching Experience Required
  • Any exceptions or additions that the Board of Education may feel appropriate and necessary
  • Ability to work effectively with secondary students, parents, teachers
  • Ability to work with other administrators, Central Office, and the State Department of Education
  • Ability to involve staff in the general operation of the school
  • Ability to involve staff, parents and community in the improvement of the instructional program
  • Ability to assess general strengths and weaknesses, and to design and implement an improvement program
  • Ability to relate student assessment date to the needs of the instructional program
  • Ability to organize and plan school-wide and specific activities and programs
  • Ability to utilize and supervise staff in the most beneficial areas, including maintenance and custodial staff
  • Ability to lead the integration of technology into the daily operations and the daily instruction within the classroom
  • Ability to communicate a three to five year vision for the school and then act upon the vision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To serve as the instructional leader and chief administrative officer of a secondary school.

  • Provides effective leadership in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the instructional program
  • Evaluates teachers and provides support in areas needed for improvement
  • Visits classrooms to monitor instruction and compliance with school's vision
  • Interprets and enforces federal and state laws, and state/local Board policies
  • Recruits, screens, selects and assigns the school certified and support staff
  • Assumes responsibility for scheduling
  • Prepares/administers/supervises school budget and succinctly monitors all financial operations of the school
  • Secures, maintains and manages material resources
  • Actively seeks alternative funding sources
  • Ensures professional growth opportunities for staff and self
  • Demonstrates professional ethics
  • Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication
  • Articulates the school's mission to students, staff, community, and shows respect to all
  • Represents the school as an active and integral part of the community
  • Ensures the accuracy of student records and attendance
  • Works to be highly visible within the school and community
  • Ensures the implementation of all emergency procedures relating to the safety of students and staff
  • Implements proper student discipline activities
  • Directs the student counseling program
  • Complies with all health regulations including the school nurse program and the Child Nutrition Program
  • Evaluates all programs and services as they effect the operation of the school
  • Provides for his/her professional growth through workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning
  • Stay abreast of current research, current effective programs and network with other administrators to ascertain what is working in other places
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity are required to perform job responsibilities

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with principal contract and Board policy.
