Position Description

The Instructional Specialist- Accelerating Opportunity-Kansas (AO-K) will provide basic education in Reading, English, Math and GED preparation to adult students, in conjunction with a primary content instructor in one of Barton's AO-K pathways (e.g. Healthcare, Welding). This individual will provide appropriate support services for Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult Secondary Education (ASE), and GED students while those students are enrolled in college classes in their chosen Career Technical Pathway by coordinating with the content instructor and using the appropriate team teaching methods to best deliver the material to their students. This individual will also work closely with other Adult Education staff to identify appropriate goals for each student and to ensure that program goals are being met and contractual obligations are being upheld. Note: This position is either completely or partially grant funded. Employment contingent upon continued grant funding.

Position Responsibilities

60% -

Teaching Performance

  1. Present ideas clearly and create a climate conducive to learning and critical thinking.

  2. Design and implement structured academic components for ABE, ASE students to gain new skills, improve existing skills, achieve an employment credential and/or to prepare them for the GED test.

  3. Apply research-based instructional practices (i.e. Team Teaching). Incorporate the use of computers and other technologies, where applicable.

  4. Present well-prepared, well-organized and relevant material to help AO-K students achieve in their chose career pathway.

20% -

Evaluation of Student Learning

  1. Participate in assessment activities for the purpose of creating an individualized skill development plan including appropriate curriculum resources.

  2. Develop and implement strategies to motivate students to identify and pursue their academic goals.

  3. Evaluate student progress and readiness for the next academic level or component and provide feedback in a timely manner.

10% -

Specific Instruction Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in professional development opportunities to acquire new skills or improve existing skills.

  2. Facilitate the continued participation and success of Barton's AO-K students.

  3. Build community awareness by promoting Adult Education/AO-K programs.

  4. Deliver quality education and training; demonstrate skills in curriculum development, teaching and assessment.

  5. Utilize the state mandated data system (PABLO) to ensure the integrity of student records.

  6. Submit student data weekly, e.g. attendance records, test scores, for input into PABLO.

5% -

Support of College Policies and Procedures

  1. Comply with established college policies and procedures.

  2. Maintain accurate scholastic records of students while assuring confidentiality of student information.

5% - Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

Expectations

  1. Maintain professional, high quality ABE, ASE, GED and AO-K Programs.

  2. Identify and attain program goals/objectives primarily related to improving services to project participants.

  3. Identify possible new program initiatives.

  4. Encourage ABE/ASE students and GED graduates to pursue post-secondary training/education opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Experience - Two years to five years of similar or related experience.

Education - A Bachelor's Degree.

Interpersonal Skills - Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the college for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.

Physical Requirements

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.

The hourly rate for Instructional Specialist (AOK) (Correctional Facility) position is $20.90 to $23.34.
