Substitute School Nurse (RN or LPN) QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensure: Current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Massachusetts.
  • Education: Baccalaureate or Associate's degree in nursing (for RN) or a diploma/certificate from an accredited practical nursing program (for LPN).
  • Clinical: Current CPR/AED certification required. Experience with children having disabilities preferred.

REPORTS TO: Nurse Leader and/or Building Principal JOB GOAL: To provide professional health services to students, parents, and staff by coordinating the resources of the school and home community, thus promoting an increased awareness of health and healthy lifestyles. DUTIES:

  • Implement and manage a school health program for a school population.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable FERPA and HIPAA regulations regarding student records and health information.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to adjust to the changing needs and demands of the department.
  • Work cooperatively with others to achieve common district goals.
  • Possess high-level interpersonal skills and a respectful attitude towards all employees.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assessment & Care Planning: Support the assessment of student health and make recommendations for care; implement and maintain Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Individual Medical Protocols.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate medication records, up-to-date school health records, and health care logs (including Medicaid reimbursement documentation).
  • Clinical Care: Provide and supervise medically prescribed interventions (First Aid, CPR, Triage, and medication administration) in accordance with IHCPs and within the scope of professional licensure (RN/LPN).
  • Communication: Manage health office communications and report significant health issues to the Nurse Leader or Head Nurse.
  • Coordination: Obtain physician orders and parental consents for medication; consult with family physicians as appropriate with parental authorization.
  • Collaboration: Maintain timely communication with classroom staff regarding medical issues, IEP dates, seizures, and field trip needs.
  • Staff Training: Support the Nurse Leader in providing training to unlicensed school personnel for the administration of prescription medications per MDPH guidelines.
  • Administration: Distribute IHCPs as designated by the Administration and perform other duties as determined by the Superintendent of Schools or designees.
