Job Description

The Data Literacy Specialist will promote a culture of data-driven decision making at Childrens by improving the skills of front-line staff and leaders across the organization in data-driven improvement. This role serves as an educator, consultant, and change agent to empower staff at all levels to effectively use data in their daily work. By bridging the gap between data and decision-making, the Specialist ensures employees can interpret data and draw actionable insights, ultimately helping Childrens achieve better outcomes and drive improvement.

The Specialist will develop and implement educational programs tailored to different user personas to ensure effective use of data visualization and analytics tools such as Microsoft Fabric/Power BI and Epic's SlicerDicer. They will collaborate with operational data stewards to tailor learning initiatives to specific business units.

Experience

  • 1 year of experience delivering technical training or related educational content
  • 1 year of experience using analytical skills, process mapping, testing, and other tools/systems for business intelligence
  • 1 year of experience with significant involvement in data-driven projects for quality improvement, research, operations, or other organizational needs

Education

  • Masters degree (or higher) in engineering, psychology, social science, library or information science or related field and relevant experience, or
  • Bachelors degree in engineering, psychology, social science, library or information science, or related field with 3+ years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years of experience delivering technical training or related educational content
  • 3 years of experience using analytical skills, process mapping, testing, and other tools/systems for business intelligence
  • 3 years of experience with significant involvement in data-driven projects for quality improvement, research, operations, or other organizational needs.
  • Experience with substantial educational responsibilities and technical experience in data analytics

  • Data analysis and visualization skills (e.g. using Epic, Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, R, Python, or other programming language) are required

Job Responsibilities

Educational Content and Delivery

  • Leads planning and delivery of educational sessions, ensuring users are comfortable interacting with tools like Power BI and Epic's SlicerDicer.
  • Develops, tests, and leads dissemination strategies (e.g., road shows, office hours, consultations) to increase engagement and effectiveness.
  • Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of the data literacy program to drive iterative improvements.
  • Creates content including videos and tip sheets.

Engagement and Support of Data Consumers, Data Stewards, and Analysts

  • Develops influential relationships within user base and leadership population and acts as key point of communication to and from data consumers.
  • Identifies, recruits, and onboards operational data stewards with local subject matter and workflow expertise.
  • Develops ongoing education plans for data stewards to augment their job performance with data skills.
  • Encourages and coaches the data stewards to act as on-the-ground data champions who can reinforce lessons, mentor their teams, and promote data-driven practices within their units.

Promotion of Self-Service Analytics Tools

  • Actively engages with stakeholders who may need data (e.g. through division meetings, rounding, office hours, etc.), help refine data questions to meet user goals and be as feasible as possible, and triage stakeholders to the right solution.
  • Understands the underlying architecture and purpose of self-service tools across the organization and direct users to the appropriate tool for their question.
  • Collaborates with analytics and Epic analyst colleagues to establish the right venue for fulfilling data requests.

Assess and Benchmark Data Literacy

  • Conducts evaluations of current data literacy levels and data usage habits across the organization.
  • Identifies gaps in skills and knowledge across different service lines and roles.
  • Uses surveys, rounding, interviews, and analytics (e.g., tool usage stats) to establish baseline competencies and to segment audiences (clinical, operational, administrative) for targeted development.

Develop Data Literacy Strategy and Curriculum

  • Creates a comprehensive data literacy improvement plan with clear learning objectives, curricula, and success metrics.
  • Designs a tiered training program that addresses foundational data concepts for all employees, as well as intermediate and advanced topics for power users.
  • Continuously refines the curriculum to include relevant healthcare use cases (quality improvement, patient safety, finance, etc.) and ensure alignment with the hospitals strategic goals and compliance requirements.

Optimization of Visual Analytics Tools

  • Collaborates with analytics developers and other stakeholders to optimize the design and user experience of visual analytics tools.
