PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To ensure appropriate program implementation of reading strategies teaching students in both English and Spanish; to promote a positive working relationship, among and between staff and the schools, by establishing a climate conducive to open communication and productive work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's Degree

Bilingual/ESL Certification

Reading Specialization or Reading Background

Valid Texas Teacher Certificate

Elementary Generalist or Reading Certification EC-6

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Communicate effectively (verbal and written); utilize effective interpersonal skills; interpret data, initiate, plan, organize and implement multiple tasks

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Keep informed about current literature and research on the reading program by participating in staff development sessions; disseminate professional information and materials to the schools.
  • Provide assistance for classroom teachers with reading groups of children in the classroom daily (inclusion model).
  • Develop and follow course syllabus, which includes content and up-to-date material to comply with reading program guidelines.
  • Monitor student progress in reading using appropriate formative and summative instruments.
  • Monitor the established system for selection of children using teachers' records and work with each campus in this selection process.
  • Monitor the progress of children using teacher's weekly and bi-weekly records.
  • Keep the principal informed regarding the status of all student progress and of directives or requests received internally or externally.
  • Promote the continuous enhancement of a climate conducive to open communication and productive work with schools and the department of Instructional Services.
  • Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
  • Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).
