Key duties include providing individual/group counseling, teaching classroom guidance lessons, collaborating with staff and parents, and intervening in crises. They promote a safe, nurturing environment to foster academic success and resilience. At the elementary level, the counselor will focus on foundational social skills, emotional regulation, understanding self/others, and fostering a positive attitude toward school, while at the middle school level, the counselor will focus on academic preparation, navigating peer pressure, early career exploration, and social-emotional growth during adolescence. Assigned Locations Big Otter Elementary and Clay County Middle School Key Responsibilities and Duties Direct Student Services: Provide individual counseling, small group sessions (social skills, grief, conflict resolution), and classroom lessons on developmental topics. Academic Support: Assist with study skills, academic planning, monitoring progress, and easing transitions (e.g., elementary to middle, middle to high). Social/Emotional Development: Help students manage emotions, peer relationships, and bullying; offer crisis intervention for issues like anxiety or family struggles. Collaboration: Consult with parents, teachers, and staff regarding student needs, behavioral strategies, and classroom management. Referrals: Connect families with school-based mental health specialists or external community resources for severe issues. Program Development: Implement a comprehensive school counseling curriculum (e.g., ASCA Model ). *Per WV Code 18-5-18b(f), "school counselors shall spend at least 80 percent of work time in a direct counseling relationship with pupils and shall devote no more than 20 percent of the workday to administrative duties." The school counselor will maintain schedules and other appropriate records to document his/her workday. Qualifications Master's degree in school counseling or behavioral science. State certification or licensure as a school counselor. Knowledge of child development, counseling theories, and assessment techniques. Terms of Employment 200 Days Effective 2026-2027 School Year Compensation Salary based on experience and education level per Clay County Board of Education Salary Schedule, plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
