Assistant Principal - Elementary School

Nature of Work

Under the direction of the Principal, the Assistant Principal serves as an educational leader and assists in planning, coordinating, and supervising activities and programs related to the administration of the elementary school. This position is an 11-month position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, development, organization, coordination, and supervision of instructional programs and activities.
  • Interpret and implement the district-approved curriculum program in alignment with individual school needs.
  • Provide leadership to professional staff in determining instructional objectives and identifying school needs to support long- and short-range planning.
  • Assist the Principal in the overall administration of the school and assume leadership responsibilities in the Principal's absence.
  • Support the supervision of student enrollment, records, attendance, and health requirements.
  • Develop emergency response plans in collaboration with staff and public safety agencies.
  • Maintain a commitment to ongoing professional growth while supporting district and school-based professional development initiatives.
  • Foster positive relationships with students while implementing effective and equitable discipline practices.
  • Supervise attendance monitoring and follow-up communication with students and families as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of local policies and state and federal laws relating to minors.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree required with successful teaching experience.
  • Master's Degree or higher preferred, along with NC Licensure in School Administration.
  • Experience as a Behavior Specialist and/or in student intervention services preferred.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, and related technology.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
  • Ability to analyze data, people, and situations and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, evaluations, policies, contracts, and related documents using prescribed formats.
  • Ability to apply logical and analytical thinking to problem-solving, data collection, and decision-making.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions and manage multiple abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical concepts, including percentages, decimals, statistical inference, and descriptive statistics.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with students, staff, parents, and the community, including in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and drug screening.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Assist with student orientation and registration activities.
  • Support the development and implementation of school goals, objectives, and instructional programs.
  • Provide direction and support to staff to achieve instructional goals and support professional growth.
  • Assist in evaluating school programs and staff performance and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Participate in establishing budget priorities and managing school resources.
  • Maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills.
  • Assist in preparing and managing budgets, schedules, and co-curricular programs.
  • Communicate and reinforce school discipline policies and procedures with students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Support effective communication of school goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist in supervising auxiliary services and utilizing community resources to enhance school programs.
  • Promote open communication, positive student attitudes, and respect for the dignity and worth of all students and staff.
  • Assist in maintaining records, reports, inventories, supplies, textbooks, equipment, and instructional materials.
