Position Type: Full-Time | 11-Month or 12-Month Position

Position Overview

The Assistant Principal of Empower Community School - Upper Campus serves as a key instructional and

operational leader supporting grades 5-8. Under the direction of the Principal, the Assistant Principal helps

cultivate a positive, academically rigorous, and student-centered learning environment focused on high

expectations, strong relationships, and continuous improvement.

The Assistant Principal supports instructional leadership, school culture, student discipline, teacher

development, school operations, family engagement, and school safety while ensuring alignment with

Empower's mission, vision, and strategic priorities. This role requires a strong instructional leader who believes

deeply in the potential of all students and can effectively support middle school scholars through both academic

and social-emotional development.

This position was developed using leadership expectations and responsibilities aligned to Alabama school

leadership standards and comparable assistant principal leadership frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership

  • Support the Principal in implementing rigorous instructional programs aligned to Alabama College and Career Ready Standards (ALCOS), Cognia standards, and Empower instructional expectations

  • Conduct classroom walkthroughs, observations, and coaching conversations using ATOT, IPG, and Empower instructional frameworks

  • Support teachers with lesson internalization, data-driven instruction, and small-group instructional practices

  • Assist with the implementation of intervention systems, MTSS processes, and Power Hour supports

  • Analyze student achievement data including ACAP, NWEA MAP, DIBELS, and classroom assessment data to support school improvement efforts

  • Support implementation of literacy and numeracy initiatives in alignment with Alabama Literacy and Numeracy Acts

  • Assist with professional development planning and facilitate instructional coaching cycles

Student Culture & Discipline

  • Support the development and maintenance of a safe, structured, and positive school culture

  • Administer student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and restorative practices framework

  • Lead behavior interventions, re-entry conferences, attendance interventions, and parent conferences

  • Monitor PBIS systems, referral trends, and behavior data to improve school culture outcomes

  • Build positive relationships with students while maintaining high expectations for behavior and academic success

  • Support implementation of Empower's House System and school culture initiatives

School Operations & Management

  • Assist with daily school operations including arrival, dismissal, lunch supervision, transitions, testing coordination, and emergency procedures

  • Support scheduling, staffing coordination, and supervision of assigned personnel

  • Maintain high visibility throughout the building and at school events

  • Assist with school-wide communication systems including ParentSquare and operational procedures

  • Support school compliance, accreditation efforts, and continuous improvement planning

  • Assist in coordinating state testing and accountability processes

Teacher Support & Staff Development

  • Conduct teacher observations and provide actionable feedback focused on instructional growth

  • Support onboarding and mentoring of new teachers and staff

  • Collaborate with instructional coaches and school leadership teams to improve instructional effectiveness

  • Support staff accountability and implementation of school expectations and procedures

  • Promote a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and continuous growth

Family & Community Engagement

  • Develop strong relationships with families and community stakeholders

  • Support family engagement events, student activities, and extracurricular programs

  • Communicate proactively and professionally with parents regarding student progress, behavior, and school initiatives

  • Serve as a visible representative of Empower Schools of Alabama within the community

Safety & Crisis Management

  • Assist in implementing school safety procedures, crisis response plans, and emergency drills

  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and student safety concerns

  • Ensure compliance with school safety protocols and operational procedures

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Educational Leadership or Administration required

  • Valid Alabama Class A or higher certification in Educational Administration required

  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience required

  • Previous leadership experience preferred

  • Strong knowledge of instructional leadership, middle school culture, discipline systems, and school operations

  • Knowledge of Alabama accountability systems, Cognia standards, MTSS, and instructional best practices

  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to build relationships with students, staff, and families

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success
