DESCRIPTION
Madison District Public Schools is seeking an experienced, student-centered educational leader to serve as the Director of Special Education. The Director of Special Education provides leadership, coordination, and oversight of all special education programs and services across the district to ensure compliance with federal and state laws while supporting high-quality instructional programming for students with disabilities.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, knowledge of special education law and procedures, the ability to build collaborative relationships with staff and families, and a commitment to ensuring equitable opportunities and positive outcomes for all students.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in Elementary Education
- Competency in content area
- Knowledge of effective instruction and best practices
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with students, parents, and staff
- Strong communication, technology, and organizational skills
- Competency in student management and supervision
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide leadership and supervision for all district special education programs and services
- Ensure district compliance with all federal, state, and local special education requirements
- Supervise and evaluate special education staff, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers
- Coordinate and support IEP development, implementation, and compliance
- Serve as district liaison with outside agencies, consultants, and Oakland Schools
- Assist building administrators and staff with student support, behavioral interventions, and program development
- Oversee special education budgets, grants, and required reporting
- Coordinate professional development related to special education programming and compliance
- Monitor student achievement data and support continuous program improvement
- Participate in problem-solving meetings, manifestation determinations, and disciplinary reviews as needed
- Support transition planning and post-secondary opportunities for students with disabilities
- Maintain positive communication and relationships with families and community stakeholders
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee
