Position OverviewThe Elementary School Counselor plays a vital role in fostering a positive, safe, and inclusive school climate. This position focuses on supporting students' academic success, personal/social development, and emotional well-being during their foundational formative years. By providing proactive, data-driven school counseling programs, the counselor helps students develop resilience, emotional regulation, and social skills, ensuring every child is ready to learn.
Key Responsibilities- Direct Student Support:
- Deliver engaging classroom guidance lessons based on school counseling standards (e.g., empathy, bullying prevention, growth mindset, and coping skills).
- Conduct short-term individual counseling to help students navigate immediate social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
- Facilitate small group counseling sessions focusing on specific needs such as friendship skills, grief, changing families, or anger management.
- Crisis Response & Intervention:
- Provide immediate support and intervention during student crises, mental health concerns, or behavioral emergencies.
- Collaborate with administration to implement school-wide safety and crisis response protocols.
- Collaboration & Consultation:
- Consult with parents, guardians, teachers, and administrators to address student needs and develop effective intervention plans.
- Serve as an active member of student support teams (e.g., 504, IEP, and Multi-Tiered System of Supports/MTSS).
- Act as a liaison between the school, families, and community mental health resources.
- Program Management & Advocacy:
- Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with national standards.
- Advocate for equitable access to educational opportunities for all students.
- Coordinate school-wide initiatives that promote a positive culture, such as Red Ribbon Week, Kindness Month, or transition programs for incoming kindergarteners.

USD 336, Holton is located 30 miles north of Topeka nestled in the rolling hills of Northeast Kansas. Holton is a classic midwestern community in the center of Jackson County. We have a student population of approximately 1,000 students. There are three attendance centers: Holton Elementary School Pre-K to 5th Grade, Holton Middle School Grades 6- 8, and Holton High School 9-12. The High School is a 3A school.
