POSITION School Psychologist

LOCATION Districtwide

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Special Services Director, assess students' intellectual and mental functional levels; provide information for program development and student placement; develop behavior plans; and provide information on child development and/or issues on specific students to instructional personnel. The School Psychologist is also part of the District Evaluation/Assessment Team and is responsible for the evaluation of new referral students.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate Certificate as a School Psychologist.
  • Master's degree or Ed.S. in School Psychology or higher.
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of mobility.
  • Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later).
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility.
  • Completion of all district-required trainings within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Understanding of special education laws and procedures, including IDEA, IEPs, and 504 plans.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional practices for students with behavioral, developmental, and learning needs.
  • Knowledge of child psychology principles and current developments in child psychology, including, assessment methods, behavior modification, etc.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
  • Understanding of behavior supports, including PBIS, de-escalation strategies, and behavior management systems.
  • Demonstrated computer skills for District software applications, including, Google Suite, Skyward student management, recordkeeping, and billing for services as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of inclusion practices and access to the general education curriculum.
  • Understanding of child development and social-emotional learning.
  • Deliver differentiated instruction to meet diverse academic and behavioral needs.
  • Develop and implement IEPs and behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff.
  • Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and support staff.
  • Engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Provide leadership with colleagues regarding areas of expertise and practice.
  • Build positive relationships with students, including those with complex needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work with students, teachers, and families to support students in achieving the fullest potential educational experience at school.
  • Identify and assist in implementing reasonable accommodations for individual cognitive, physical, emotional, and social needs.
  • The school psychologist accomplishes this by assessing student skills and by planning and providing academic and social-emotional interventions.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations of students for the purpose of special education eligibility and/or recommending courses of action or corrective procedures to maximize learning and social-emotional skills.
  • Interpret and integrate assessment information into an overview for determining program and service eligibility, and interventions.
  • Compile written reports integrating assessment results and implications and provide feedback to team members and parents.
  • Employs a strengths-based approach to writing evaluation reports which meet State timelines and District guidelines.
  • Leads multi-disciplinary teams in completing evaluations to determine eligibility for special education services.
  • Conducts counseling activities according to district guidelines and needs, including, classroom lessons and individual and small group counseling for students who require supplemental support to access and/or make progress in general education.
  • Consult and collaborate with parents, school staff, and outside agency personnel regarding mental health, behavioral, social-emotional, and educational concerns, their implications, and means of intervening.
  • Function as a school liaison in initiating, expediting, and managing contacts and referrals with outside agencies, specialists, and service providers.
  • Serves as a resource to students by providing counseling that will lead each student to increase self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge of current practices in the educational field by attending District professional development, seminars, workshops, and professional meetings, by conducting research, and/or by maintaining professional affiliations.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate management of special education evaluation timelines including initial referrals and triennial evaluations.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and families.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a school environment with frequent interaction with students, staff, families, and community agencies. The position requires travel between district buildings and attendance at meetings or trainings outside the regular school day. The School Psychologist may experience exposure to challenging student behaviors, crisis situations, and emotionally sensitive information requiring professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment. Duties may include prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, computer use, and the ability to move materials related to assessments and instructional supports.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and work year to be determined by the negotiated agreement, subject to the needs of the District.

Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed before employment commences. The successful candidate for this position must complete a fingerprinted background check with the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Employment is contingent upon clearance of the background check.

SICK LEAVE - All regular, non-substitute employees receive 12 sick leave days (prorated based on FTE) and paid time off. Substitute employees receive sick leave per RCW 49.46.210.

PAID TIME OFF - All regular, non-substitute employees receive paid time off, including annual and/or vacation leave. Paid time off varies by position and work year. Refer to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement or salary schedule for details.
