Substitute School Nurse (AS NEEDED)

LOCATION: Local School, as assigned REPORTS TO: Principal and Lead Nurse FLSA STATUS: Exempt TERMS: 182-Day appointment compensated in accordance with the board-approved salary schedule

Qualifications:

  • Current Alabama License as an RN and up to date BLS/CPR certification.
  • Understanding of the Pike Road Way.
  • Clinical nursing experience with the pediatric population to include familiarization with common medication dosages, ability to pass drug dosage calculation test, urinary catheterization experience, high level of understanding pertaining to Type I and II Diabetes, ADD, seizures, genetic disorders and other common diagnoses.
  • Ability to clearly and professionally communicate with supervisor, parents, teachers and administration.
  • Understanding of the nursing role in a school setting, essential school system functions, departments, and personnel.
  • Comprehension of pertinent laws regarding school nursing.
  • Possess a positive attitude with the ability to adapt in ever changing situations.
  • Adequate strength, dexterity and agility to perform all required tasks.

Essential Functions:

  • Embodiment of the Pike Road Schools mission, vision and goals.
  • Practice within the subscribed parameters of the Alabama Nurse Practice Act, Alabama State Department of Education laws as well as other standards as they apply to the school nurse clinical setting.
  • Collaborate with the Lead RN to identify students with educational health needs.
  • Implement Individualized Health Care plans as written by the Lead RN; recognize and communicate inconstancies or ineffective plan components in a timely manner so that adjustments can be made.
  • Perform assessment, appropriate treatment and make recommendations for illness and injuries that occur in the school setting.
  • Administer medication in compliance with Pike Road School District procedures, state policies and laws.
  • Perform accurate and timely inventory of medications and equipment under your care.
  • Document all nursing activities in the INow system, and maintain standards of student sign in and pass system.
  • Appropriate and timely response to potential outbreaks of communicable disease to prevent spread as outlined in the PRS communicable disease prevention procedures.
  • Approve field trip schedule for assigned campus, and submit needs schedule for substitute nurses when appropriate for field trips.
  • Perform health education for individuals and classrooms as needed and when assigned by Lead RN.
  • Perform and assist with screenings as needed.
  • Suitably report potential or confirmed cases of abuse, medical neglect, or code of conduct violations to administration, supervisor and appropriate authority.
  • Stooping, bending, twisting, turning, reaching and lifting of heavy objects are routine in this position; performance of these functions within the OSHA recommended scope of appropriate workplace actions is expected.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Nursing Supervisor or District Administration.
