Position Type: Secretarial/Clerical/Secretary Date Posted: 5/28/2026 Location: Vernon Johns Middle School Title: Attendance Secretary Salary Range: commensurate with experience Supervisor: Principal Classification: Non-Exempt Contract Length: 12 months (260 Days) Job Summary The attendance secretary is responsible for maintaining complete and accurate student accounting records for every child in the school to which assigned. The attendance secretary is directly responsible to the building administrator or his/her designee. Essential Duties Issues absence and tardy slips to students. Supervises the collection of attendance reports from the classroom. Supervises the keeping of daily attendance sheets. Confers with parents on daily absences, early dismissals and makes calls home when necessary. Supervises the keeping of tardiness records. Supervises the keeping of suspension records. Consults with students on tardiness, reminding them of proper penalties when necessary. Investigates attendance problems reported by others. Counsels students in matters of attendance and tardiness and makes every effort to gain their cooperation. Provides attendance information to the guidance counselor and principal. Counsels students and carries out the school's policy on truancy. Maintains a file on all referrals, counseling, and action taken. Refers to the Truancy Officer and Dropout Prevention Coordinator or any other agency those cases of chronic absenteeism, tardiness, or truancy that have proved unresponsive to counseling. Consults with members of the student personnel team when requested to do so. Any other responsibilities deemed necessary by the principal. Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required) Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to take independent initiative, while committing to collaboration Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends based on school, family, and district needs Ability to employ tact, diplomacy, and sound judgement in dealing with sensitive issues and challenging situations Strong organizational skills Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite Ability to leverage (and when needed learn) technology and software applications to create reports, maintain records, and provide data Ability to create and maintain strong community collaborations Willingness to learn and apply new skills and content Minimum Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GED Experience: Must have prior work related experience and clerical training. Knowledge of high school attendance laws and reporting codes.
