BASIC FUNCTION:
Serves as an educational and community leader, and chief administrator for an assigned middle school with coordination of all school objectives, instructional programs, department chairpersons and teacher and staff assignments and evaluations, student activities, school plant operations, school's attendance area, and other responsibilities as designated by the District Superintendent or his designee.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Principal-Middle School is expected both to communicate and listen so that the goals of the school reflect the needs and interests of the school's attendance area which it serves. The Principal-Middle School is expected to know the parents and community and interpret it to district administrators in a valid manner. The age of the students, the program and the size of the school make this a more complex assignment than Principal-Elementary
School.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Plans, organizes, controls and directs instructional activities, extracurricular events, special programs and plant operations at a district middle school; confers with District Office personnel regarding staff, programs, students, finances and legal requirements; implements and modifies the school's mission, goals, objectives and programs as needed.
Interviews, selects, directs, evaluates and supervises certificated and classified personnel; assigns facultyand staff as appropriate to meet school objectives; performs certificated staff recruiting duties for the district as assigned.
Directs and participates in a planned program of classroom visitations and observations; recommends discipline, reassignment or termination action as appropriate; documents evidence of substandard performance.
Enforces applicable state and district codes, policies and laws, administers district and school site discipline policies and safety programs.
Plans and directs the business operations of school; develops and administers site budgets; assures proper allocation of funds for instructional and non-instructional equipment and materials.
Directs the evaluation and revision of curricular and instructional programs according to the individual school needs with appropriate district administrators; communicates with teachers to assure instructional programs meet student needs and district requirements.
Establishes, coordinates and maintains communication with community and parent groups, city officials, parent faculty organizations and law enforcement officials.
Assigns duties and responsibilities to one assistant principal.
Coordinates the Student Nutrition program in cooperation with the Manager-Student Nutrition Services.
Prepares and writes correspondence, bulletins and other communications on behalf of the school; arranges for school-level public relations and publicity for special events and achievements as appropriate.
Conducts articulation activities with elementary feeder schools and the district high schools; develops and directs an orientation program for new students.
Plans, implements, directs and evaluates instructional and categorical programs in accordance with state and federal laws, district regulations and other specially funded requirements.
Assures the health, safety and welfare of students; oversees attendance, behavior management, counseling, guidance and other support services.
Coordinates the maintenance operations of the school plant; assures proper management, maintenance and inventory of materials, equipment, buildings and grounds.
Supervises, directs or attends a variety of student activities during the day or in the evening.
Directs and implements a guidance program that assists students to develop skills and insights that lead to personal, academic and vocational goals.
Plans and administers Aopen house@ at school periodically.
Attends, conducts and chairs a variety of meetings with faculty, parents and community representatives; coordinates and meets with school site advisory groups; conducts student/parent appeals; responds to and resolves parent, student and staff
complaints; represents the school at Board, district and community functions.
Directs the preparation and maintenance of a variety of district, county, state and federally-mandated records and reports regarding student attendance, welfare, discipline, safety, academic achievement and certification for graduation.
Performs related duties as assigned.

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Proper California Administrative Credential.
Five (5) years of teaching experience, preferably at the junior high or middle school grade levels.
Master's Degree.
Demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities.
Meet district standards for physical and mental health.
