Description: The School Nurse promotes and protects the health, well-being, and educational success of students by providing comprehensive health services within the school setting. The School Nurse assesses student health needs, administers medications and treatments, manages chronic and acute health conditions, responds to emergencies, maintains health records, and collaborates with families, healthcare providers, and school personnel to support student learning and safety. The School Nurse ensures compliance with federal, state, and local health regulations while fostering a healthy school environment that enables all students to achieve their full academic potential.
Essential Functions:
- Provide direct nursing care, first aid, and emergency response for students and staff.
- Assess, monitor, and manage student health conditions, including chronic illnesses and special healthcare needs.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and district policies.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records.
- Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and contribute to Section 504 and IEP teams as appropriate.
- Conduct health screenings and coordinate referrals for medical follow-up.
- Monitor immunization compliance and communicable disease prevention efforts.
- Educate students, staff, and families regarding health-related topics.
- Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, counselors, families, and community healthcare providers to support student well-being.
- Ensure compliance with applicable nursing standards, state regulations, and district policies.
- Participate in crisis response, safety planning, and school health initiatives.
Qualifications: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- School Nurse Certification (preferred).
- Knowledge of pediatric health, public health practices, and school health regulations.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a school environment.
