Position: Reading Specialist

Position Summary:
Wayland Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Reading Specialist to provide targeted, evidence-based literacy instruction and serve as a leader in advancing high-quality reading practices. Grounded in the Science of Reading, this role supports students in developing proficiency across the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

The Reading Specialist collaborates with educators to design, implement, and refine tiered systems of support (MTSS), ensuring all students have equitable access to rigorous and meaningful literacy instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Instruction & Student Support

  • Provide targeted literacy instruction for students in grades K–2 through push-in and pull-out models
  • Implement evidence-based reading practices aligned with the Science of Reading
  • Administer and analyze formal and informal literacy assessments (e.g., DIBELS, Amplify)
  • Use data to identify needs, monitor progress, and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Develop and support targeted, measurable student goals

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, multilingual educators, and special educators to support diverse learners
  • Co-plan and model effective literacy instruction
  • Lead and support data meetings to inform instructional decision-making
  • Contribute to MTSS and Student Support Team (SST) processes
  • Support implementation of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM)
  • Serve as a resource on evidence-based literacy practices, dyslexia, and intervention strategies

Coaching & Communication

  • Support and, when appropriate, coach educators in effective literacy practices
  • Promote inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive instruction
  • Communicate clearly with families regarding student progress and strategies for support

  • All students can become proficient readers with the right instruction and support
  • Literacy instruction must be explicit, evidence-based, and equitable
  • Collaboration and continuous learning improve student outcomes
  • Data should inform instruction while honoring the strengths and identities of all learners

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required; Master’s degree in Reading, Literacy, or related field preferred
  • Valid Massachusetts Reading Specialist licensure required
  • SEI Endorsement required
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students preferred
  • Strong understanding of the Science of Reading and evidence-based literacy practices
  • Training in Orton-Gillingham and/or Wilson preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Work Schedule and Compensation:

  • Salary: Commensurate with experience and in accordance with the Wayland Educator’s Association (WEA) collective bargaining agreement (e.g., Master’s through Master’s +30 range: $95,754–$126,651)
  • Work Schedule: 2026–2027 school year in alignment with the WEA Unit A contract
