Speech Language Pathologist

Responsible for the identification of students with speech-language impairments, provision of speech-language services as well as collaboration with students, parents and other appropriate personnel regarding speech and language impairments and/or services.
Essential Job Functions
- Assists in identifying students needing evaluation and/or services.
- Observes and evaluates students after referral by the school's child study or IEP committee.
- Completes evaluation and conducts meetings within the required time frame.
- Determines educational implications of evaluation findings.
- Provides written/oral report to school child study committee and to parents.
- Participates in the development of IEPs for those students identified as SLI or those students receiving speech as a related service
- Provides services in accordance with the IEPs of those students who are identified as Speech and Language Impaired or those students receiving speech as a related service.
- Participates in necessary meetings (IEP, Eligibility, Triennial, etc).
- Reports progress as determined by the student's IEP.
- Serves as a member of the Child Study Committee when appropriate.
- Manages caseload in accordance with county procedures.
- Recommends appropriate service delivery options.
- Complies with state and federal regulations.
- Alerts appropriate personnel of any IEP modifications and/or accommodations.
- Provides effective consultation to parents, teachers, administrators and other personnel.
- Complies with NCPS policy and procedures.
- Attends required in-services and/or staff development.
- Pursues professional development.
- Maintains appropriate licensure.
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
- Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
- Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Working knowledge of the ethics, concepts, principles, methodologies and best practice of speech language services in the educational setting. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement Individualized Education Plans. Working knowledge and understanding of special education policies and procedures at the county, state and federal levels. Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with students, teachers, parents, administrators and other school personnel.
Requirements
Must hold a master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited institution or a current license in speech pathology issued by the Virginia Board of Examiners for Audiology & Speech Pathology. See below:
§ 54.1-2603 . License required.A. In order to practice audiology or speech pathology, it shall be necessary to hold a valid license.
B. Notwithstanding the provisions of subdivision 2 of § 54.1-2601 , the Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology may license as school speech-language pathologists any person who holds a master's degree in speech-language pathology. The Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology shall issue licenses to such persons without examination, upon review of credentials and payment of an application fee in accordance with regulations of the Board for school speech-language pathologists.
Persons holding such licenses as school speech-language pathologists, without examination, shall practice solely in public school divisions; holding a license as a school speech-language pathologist pursuant to this section shall not authorize such persons to practice outside the school setting or in any setting other than the public schools of the Commonwealth, unless such individuals are licensed by the Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology to offer to the public the services defined in § 54.1-2600 .
The Board shall issue any person licensed as a school speech-language pathologist a license that notes the limitations on practice set forth in this subsection.
Persons who hold licenses issued by the Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology without these limitations shall be exempt from the requirements of this subsection.
