QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Language Arts (BX) certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in Secondary English Language Arts.
  • Master's Degree, preferred
  • Enrolled in LETRS for Educators training, preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based literacy instruction aligned to the Science of Reading.
  • Strong understanding of Michigan’s Early Literacy Law, Literacy Essentials, and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
  • Experience using and analyzing literacy assessment data, including universal screeners, diagnostic assessments, and progress monitoring tools.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
SUMMARY

The Secondary Coach is a non-evaluative instructional leader who partners with teachers to improve student achievement in literacy. The coach supports implementation of evidence-based practices aligned with Michigan’s Early Literacy Law, Literacy Essentials, MTSS, and district curriculum initiatives. Through job-embedded coaching, modeling, collaborative planning, data analysis, and professional learning, the coach strengthens Tier 1 instruction and intervention practices while building teacher capacity. The role also supports positive classroom culture and social-emotional learning to promote student engagement, self-regulation, and academic success.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support the implementation of high-quality English Language Arts instruction aligned to the Science of Reading, Michigan Literacy Essentials, district curriculum resources, and the HMH Into Literature district curriculum.
  • Provide ongoing, job-embedded coaching cycles including goal setting, collaborative planning, modeling, observation, feedback, and reflection to strengthen instructional practices and student outcomes.
  • Model and support evidence-based literacy instruction through collaborative planning, professional learning, data-informed decision making, and the implementation of effective practices in reading, writing, vocabulary, comprehension, disciplinary literacy, and student engagement.
  • Support the implementation of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) through data-informed instructional decision making and targeted intervention planning.
  • Assist teachers in integrating literacy strategies across content areas to strengthen reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills in all secondary classrooms.
  • Support district instructional initiatives, including Disciplinary Literacy, Thinking Maps, CHAMPS, and other instructional frameworks designed to improve teaching and learning.
  • Plan and facilitate professional learning opportunities that build teacher capacity.
  • Support onboarding and professional growth opportunities for new and existing teachers.
  • Maintain confidential and professional relationships, accurate records, and required documentation while representing Port Huron Schools positively with students, families, staff, and community members.
