Position Title: School Nurse
Reports To: Superintendent and Building Principals
FLSA Status: Exempt
Employment Term: As established by the Board of Education

Job Goal

To promote and protect the health, safety, and educational success of students by providing nursing services, coordinating health care, managing student health needs, and supporting a safe and healthy school environment in accordance with Iowa law, the Iowa Nurse Practice Act, and district policies.

Qualifications
  • Current Iowa Registered Nurse (RN) license.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

  • Current CPR/AED certification.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA and HIPAA requirements.

  • School Nurse Statement of Professional Recognition (SPR) preferred if required by the district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Student Health Services
  • Assess and provide nursing care for illness, injury, and emergency situations.

  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, parental authorization, district policy, and Iowa law.

  • Develop and implement Individual Health Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), and health-related accommodations for students with chronic health conditions.

  • Coordinate care for students with special health needs, including diabetes, asthma, seizures, allergies, and other medical conditions.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential health records.

Health Program Management
  • Monitor student immunization compliance and health requirements.

  • Coordinate state-required health screenings and referrals.

  • Monitor communicable diseases and implement prevention and control measures.

  • Maintain health office supplies, equipment, and medication inventory.

Health Education and Promotion
  • Provide health education to students, staff, and families.

  • Promote healthy lifestyles, wellness, injury prevention, and disease prevention.

  • Participate in district wellness initiatives and school improvement efforts.

Collaboration and Consultation
  • Serve as a health resource for students, parents, staff, physicians, and community agencies.

  • Collaborate with special education teams, 504 teams, counselors, and administrators regarding student health needs.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and educational planning.

Delegation and Training
  • Train and delegate health-related tasks to authorized school personnel as permitted by Iowa law.

  • Monitor competency and compliance of delegated staff.

  • Provide guidance during health emergencies and crisis situations.

Compliance and Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain current nursing licensure and required continuing education.

  • Adhere to Iowa Board of Nursing regulations, district policies, and professional standards of school nursing practice.

  • Prepare reports and documentation required by state and federal agencies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent or designee.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.

  • Ability to lift and assist students as necessary.

  • Ability to perform prolonged standing, walking, and computer work.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policy, job performance standards, and applicable Iowa regulations.
