Advanced Technical Center - Health Instructional Specialist (Ward 5)

Salary Range: 75k to 85k Annually - Salary determination is based on experience

Trinity Washington University is seeking a dynamic Health Sciences Instructional Specialist to provide essential instructional leadership in the delivery of foundational coursework in reading and writing, mathematics, and science education. This open position is for an instructional specialist teaching courses within the General Nursing program of study for the Advanced Technical Center (ATC), a high school dual enrollment program in the College of Arts & Sciences. Courses include Principles of Health Science, Medical Terminology, Nutrition & Wellness, Anatomy & Physiology, and Medical Microbiology. The ATC Instructional Specialist will teach these courses at the ATC's Penn Center, which is located at 1709 3rd St NE.

The Advanced Technical Center is a partnership with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) to provide DC high school students with the opportunity to complete dual enrollment pathways in Career and Technical Education fields such as health sciences and information technology.

As integral members of the CAS educator team, Specialists focus on enhancing Trinity's first-year academic experience, dual enrollment programs and meeting ambitious benchmarks for student learning, retention, and success. The incumbent will work closely with OSSE's ATC leadership team while reporting to Trinity's Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. The ATC Instructional Specialist will support the CAS dual enrollment students, with a regular course load of three classes a semester, as well participate in summer training opportunities.

Specialist appointments are full-time, 12-month, professional staff positions. ATC classes are held five days a week in a lecture/lab format. Responsibilities of the position include offering active and engaged instruction and significant hands-on learning experiences tailored to the needs the ATC student population; designing and delivering supplemental instruction for students needing additional support; playing an active role in instructional faculty development; and assessing both student proficiency and student learning outcomes, using results to improve student placement and retention and continuously improve instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates should have earned at least a Master's degree or higher in Biology, Biological Sciences, Anatomy & Physiology, Health Sciences, or a closely related field, or in Education with a strong biological science focus, from an accredited institution and be able to demonstrate strong teaching skills. Previous undergraduate or high school teaching experience required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching dual enrollment students, and who demonstrate excellence with engaged and active learning practices.

The specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Teaching three health science courses per semester in Trinity's ATC Dual Enrollment Program;
  • Maintaining regular availability outside of class in offices hours, as well as any necessary supplemental instruction, tutoring, mentoring, and other forms of student-centered support;
  • Compiling and analyzing course assessment data to develop instructional interventions and collaborating with ATC and CAS administrative teams as needed;
  • Supporting work-based learning activities and the ATC's HOSA health science student chapter and related meetings and competitions;
  • Attending weekly faculty meetings with ATC leadership, either in a face-to-face or virtual format;
  • Participate in all professional development; including multi-day (3 to 4 days) ATC Summer Instructor Institute (Trinity will provide instructors a stipend for participation in the summer institute); regular meetings with ATC instructional coach, and quarterly professional development days to prepare for the instruction of high school students;
  • Managing lab requirements and submitting supply requests as needed;
  • Updating gradebooks weekly and aligned to ATC grading policies as outlined in the SY 2026-27 instructional partner handbook;
  • Recording attendance daily in alignment with ATC attendance policies as outlined in the SY 2026-27 instructional partner handbook;
  • Adhering to and enforcing the ATC discipline policies as outlined in the SY 2026-27 instructional partner handbook;
  • Preparing substitute plans when unable to teach.

Official transcripts for all degrees earned, sample course syllabi, course evaluations and/or other evidence of teaching effectiveness, and contact information for three professional references will be needed if the candidate is invited to campus for an interview. Knowledge of the best teaching practices is required. Finalists will be invited for an interview and teaching demonstration.
