SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION
Position Title : Licensed School Nurse
Department :Student Services
Immediate Supervisor's Position Title: Building Principal and Executive Director of Student Services
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary Range: $46,744 to $107,076 Annually
General Summary of Purpose of Job:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Licensed School Nurse to join our district's health services team beginning July 1, 2026. As a Licensed School Nurse, you will play a vital role in promoting the physical, emotional, and social well-being of our students. You will work collaboratively with school staff, parents, and healthcare providers to ensure the delivery of quality health services within the school setting. The Licensed School Nurse will plan and direct the work of the school health personnel (Health Assistants and/or Licensed Practical Nurses) and services provided for the special health needs of students at the secondary level.
SECTION II: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide direct nursing care to students with acute and chronic health conditions, including administering medications, treatments, and first aid as necessary.
- Conduct health assessments and screenings to identify health concerns and develop appropriate care plans.
- Monitor and manage students with special healthcare needs, such as diabetes, asthma, allergies, and epilepsy, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the school day.
- Provide training, coaching, support, and direct the work of the building health assistants and/or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Maintain accurate documentation of delegated health procedures.
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administrators to support students' academic success by addressing health-related barriers to learning.
- Educate students, families, and staff on health-related topics, including disease prevention, nutrition, hygiene, and safety practices.
- Maintain accurate health records for all students, documenting assessments, treatments, and communications with parents and healthcare providers.
- Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) for students with complex medical needs.
- Participate in planning and implementation of 504 plans, special education evaluations, and Individual Education Programs (IEPs).
- .Provide assistance and supervision of paraprofessionals providing services to students under the category of Activities of Daily Living and approves Third Party Billing forms.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide appropriate interventions according to established protocols.
- Serve as a liaison between the school, community healthcare providers, and public health agencies to coordinate healthcare services, data reporting, and resources for students.
- Follow Minnesota Department of Health guidance and reporting requirements around public health epidemics, vision and hearing screening, and immunizations.
- Participate in school-based committees and initiatives related to health promotion, safety, and emergency preparedness.
- Adhere to professional standards, ethical principles, and legal regulations governing nursing practice in the school setting.
- Other duties as assigned.
SECTION III: WORK REQUIREMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Minimum education and experience required to perform adequately in position could reasonably be attained only by completing the following:
- Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) required
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Experience working as a school nurse or in pediatric nursing preferred
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: (Identify licenses/certification required upon hiring:
- Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Minnesota required
- Certification as a Licensed School Nurse (LSN) or willingness to obtain prior to the start of the school year required
Licensure Requirement (State Law):
In accordance with Minnesota Statutes, section 122A.261, educators working in public preschool, School Readiness, and Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) programs within school districts and charter schools are required to hold a valid Minnesota teaching license by July 1, 2028.
Educators with five (5) or more years of relevant teaching experience prior to September 2028 may qualify for an exemption under this law.
