Principal, Amelia-Nottoway Technical Center (ANTC)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

12 months / 240 days / 8 hours per day

Superintendents of Amelia and Nottoway County Public Schools

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The position is responsible for the administration and supervision of a high school technical center and its programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must hold a valid Postgraduate Professional license with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
  • Must have three to five years successful teaching and/or administrative experience (Career and Technical Education experience preferred).

*A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

  • Advises and informs the Superintendents and Amelia-Nottoway Technical Center Joint Board regarding all matters involving career and technical education programs, including recommendations for adding and/or discontinuing classes offered.
  • Provides for the continuing development and implementation of an effective instructional program through classroom supervision and instructional leadership.
  • Ensures all CTE requirements are met for all programs.
  • Establishes and maintains a handbook and policies approved by the Joint Board.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings.
  • Handles discipline in collaboration with each student's base school.
  • Serves as the instructional leader of the school; uses data to lead school efforts in achieving high academic performance of all students.
  • Analyzes and interprets data to determine the instructional focus of the school; ensures programs and strategies are in place for enrichment and remediation services for all students.
  • Creates and supports a positive school climate and culture that maximizes the learning potential and professional growth of all students and school employees.
  • Provides leadership and directs the work of teachers and support staff.
  • Collaborates with the Superintendents, Directors of Instruction, and Directors of Career and Technical Education regarding CTE curriculum development based on current trends, instructional best practices, and the Virginia Department of Education guidelines and mandates.
  • Communicates and coordinates the implementation of policies, procedures, and guidelines with all school staff.
  • Prepares regular reports for presentation to the Amelia-Nottoway Technical Center Joint Board, Superintendents, and central office Directors - as well as to the Boards of Supervisors for each county and potential partners for the technical center, as requested - related to the instructional program and operations of the school.
  • Prepares and submits on time verification and other required/requested reports related to the students and/or programs of the ANTC to the Virginia Department of Education
  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of each member of the school staff and establishes an individual program for improvement consistent with Joint Board policies and procedures.
  • Provides ongoing professional development to staff in relation to the ANTC vision and mission, school goals, and school improvement process (SIP) initiatives.
  • Interprets Amelia-Nottoway Technical Center Joint Board policies, procedures, and guidelines to parents and the public.
  • Works collaboratively with school staff and community to maintain an atmosphere conducive to student learning and a safe and supportive school environment.
  • Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes, policies and guidelines related to public schools and in particular the operation of instructional programs for the academically talented and students with disabilities.
  • Coordinates with Human Resources regarding staffing needs; recommends staffing changes; participates in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of the school staff.
  • Prepares budget recommendations to the Superintendents and School Finance Directors/Managers and monitors school and activity fund budget status throughout the year.
  • Fosters effective school-community relations by working with parents, advisory groups and social service agencies, and by facilitating community use of the school facility as established by Amelia-Nottoway Technical Center Joint Board policies.
  • Collaborates with the Superintendents, Division Disciplinary Hearing Officer and central office Directors to analyze data on student conduct and to resolve student and school issues regarding student discipline.
  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and directs teachers to alter instruction to meet individual student needs.
  • Ensures students take certification exams.
  • Responsible for planning and follow through on matters related to student registration, scheduling, orientation and the development of the Amelia-Nottoway Technical Center course offerings and master schedule.
  • Collaborates with the Superintendents, Directors of Instruction, and other school and division administrators to provide for horizontal and vertical articulation of the school’s instructional program.
  • Fosters effective home-school communication by providing opportunities for parents and teachers to discuss student progress and other matters of mutual concern, and by encouraging community involvement in school activities.
  • Budgets for and ensures proper facility maintenance; supervises the maintenance of accurate bookkeeping and accounting of school funds.
  • Remains involved in professional development and growth necessary to keep abreast of developments in secondary education and in the general field of career and technical education.
  • Communicates effectively with others both orally and in writing. Works cooperatively with the Superintendents and supervisory staff at all levels.
  • Successfully completes and manages state equipment, Carl Perkins, and other local, state, and/or federal grants.
  • Coordinates all aspects of the Piedmont Alternative School (PAS) Alternative Education grant and program.
  • Conducts needs assessments and completes requirements to increase enrollment and programming.
  • Performs other administrative or supervisory duties that may be assigned by the Superintendents or Superintendents’ Designees.

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methodologies of school administration; of instructional program planning; of career and technical education, of total school operation and group dynamics; and of related state and federal regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise the work of others
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with or without the use of an interpreter and/or use of auxiliary aids or services.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations; to plan, organize and administer a public school and direct and evaluate a diversified professional staff
  • Ability to operate computers/technology and applicable software to manage records and other writing materials
  • Demonstrated abilities in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, long-range planning, and forecasting
  • Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences and/or professional literature
  • Ability to work with and cooperate with staff at all levels and observe and follow all school division policies at all times
  • Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential and possess high moral standards and integrity
  • Demonstrated professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community
  • Demonstrated abilities in decision-making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, long range planning and forecasting and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone and to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; to hear, understand speech, and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, crawl, walk, push, pull, and reach overhead.
