TITLE: School Nurse

(Licensed Practical Nurse-L.P.N. -or- Professional Registered Nurse-R.N.)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must possess current license L.P.N or R.N. to practice nursing in the State of Alabama;

  2. Must possess a current C.P.R. certification;

  3. Verification of three (3) years in nursing or related health field. School experience preferred;

  4. Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license;

  5. Access to appropriate transportation to meet job requirements;

  6. Flexibility and ability to respond to short-notice change in schedule;

  7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

REPORTS TO:

Building Principal, Assigned R.N.

JOB GOAL:

To provide assistance to support student health initiatives district-wide and to support health clinic staff to perform various nursing duties in areas of most need.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBIITIES: (Duties include, but are not limited to :)

  1. Performs visual, scoliosis, dental and physical health assessments as mandated by SDE.

  2. Appropriate documentation of pupils with known specific physical conditions.

  3. Ability to maintain written & electronic records including the recording of pertinent health conditions, immunizations, etc. in permanent files (e.g. INOW Health).

  4. Contact with parents, teachers, community agencies and medical personnel relating to health conditions needed services & appropriate referrals.

  5. Ability to work effectively with other health clinic staff, teachers & personnel.

  6. Assist ADPH as needed with school site clinics, programs, conferences, surveys, etc.

  7. Collection, monitoring & documentation of statistical information of students for required reports.

  8. Other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent that are in accordance with the guidelines established by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

  9. Administering medications, treatments & procedures needed for school attendance, with proper written authorization.

  10. Provides in-service education & training on health-related topics for school system personnel.

  11. Promotes & assists in the control of communicable diseases and/or parasites.

  12. Prepares and assesses health care plans for students as needed.

  13. Respects & maintains confidentiality re: student health needs/records.

  14. Participates as a health team specialist to assist in the development of student's IEP-Individual education Plan.

  15. Contacting principal and Health Services office regarding crisis situations in the school. (Ex: Child abuse, threatened suicide & accidents.)

  16. Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary will be determined by the Alabama School Nurse Salary Matrix. Work year to be established by the Board.
