GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Superintendent and School Board, the Assistant Superintendent is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and coordination of curriculum, instructional programs, and related student services to support the division's educational goals and strategic priorities.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

Instructional Leadership

Provide leadership and guidance to supervisors, coordinators, teachers, parents, and administrators regarding policies, procedures, and instructional direction.

Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and instructional programs across all grade levels.

Coordinate and supervise curriculum development, instructional improvement, school performance monitoring, and program assessment.

Develop and monitor short- and long-term goals aligned with the division's strategic plan.

Meet regularly with supervisors, principals, and department staff to address instructional concerns and ensure continuous improvement.

Support the preparation and oversight of instructional budgets; review and approve grant proposals.

Plan and supervise professional learning and instructional staff development activities.

Oversee the development of summer curriculum workshops and special instructional programs.

Supervise the coordination of school counseling, student assistance programs, and related support services.

Student Services

Ensure high standards of student conduct; oversee discipline enforcement in accordance with School Board policies and due process.

Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to student services and compliance with federal and state regulations.

Provide support to schools on custody issues, enrollment matters, attendance enforcement, court orders, and student withdrawals.

Review and act upon documents and requests related to foster care, home instruction, religious exemption, international exchange students, residency, attendance, and student placement appeals.

Coordinate non-resident tuition requests, including communication with families and payment management

Organizational Support and Communication

Foster effective internal and external communication across schools, departments, and community stakeholders.

Support organizational development initiatives, including leadership development, succession planning, and strategic staffing.

Lead or support special projects as assigned by the Superintendent or School Board.

Monitor expenditures and ensure compliance for operational, competitive, and categorical grants.

Respond to concerns and questions from parents and community members.

Represent the division in regional and state-level committees, meetings, and special initiatives.

Attend School Board meetings, school events, and instructional functions as required.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum design, instructional delivery, special education, gifted education, and student support services.

Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate instructional programs aligned with the division's strategic plan.

Strong understanding of school administration, organizational leadership, and policy implementation.

Demonstrated experience with budgeting, contracts, personnel evaluation, hiring, retention, and cross-functional coordination.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with school officials, Board members, staff, and the community

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's Degree and a valid Virginia Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12 required.

Preferred qualifications include an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.), Certificate of Advanced Studies (C.A.S.), or doctoral degree.

Extensive administrative and instructional experience at the school level is required.

Central office leadership experience preferred.

A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
