Job Description

General Description: Lead Physical Therapist Position

The Office of Exceptional Education strives to provide a continuum of services to ensure that all students have a quality education that meets their unique needs and prepares them to be productive, contributing members of a global society. The Physical Therapist serves as part of a team of related service providers who support students in accessing their educational program within the comprehensive and/or private day school environment. A therapy lead serves as both a division therapist and supports the other school physical therapists (PT) and adapted physical education (APE) teachers by providing leadership to ensure that students and families receive support to address success towards achieving academic, developmental, and functional goals within the students educational plan.

Key responsibilities of the lead physical therapist include the following:

Team Leadership & Support

Contribute to the development of departmental meeting agendas and facilitate staff meetings in conjunction with the department head and lead occupational therapists.

Orient and mentor newly hired and contracted PTs; provide oversight and in-depth training on the Virginia IEP and documentation systems, including caseload setup, plan of care creation, documentation of daily logs, and IEP navigation.

Serve as the first point of contact for the team of PTs and APE teachers to address any needs, issues, or concerns.

Caseload & Service Management

Manage caseloads: ensure student service frequencies are correct, assign PTs to specific schools, and ensure caseloads are manageable and distributed fairly.

Oversee coverage of Preschool Reception and Diagnostic Services (PRDS) to ensure PT coverage for child study meetings, evaluations, eligibility, and IEP meetings.

Rectify Extended School Year (ESY) services at the end of the school year; assign coverage for students receiving ESY services; ensure students receiving ESY services have the identified positioning and mobility equipment at the ESY site.

Administrative & Operational Oversight

Manage durable medical equipment (DME) inventory.

Oversee and manage private day locations and community sites to ensure PT services are being provided as documented.

Oversee the accurate and timely completion of contractor timesheets to ensure compliance with organizational policies and project requirements.

Obtain necessary documentation and complete purchase requisitions for DME items including positioning and mobility equipment; submit documentation; schedule for delivery and send delivery tickets to appropriate personnel.

Collaboration & Professional Development

Participate in monthly lead meetings (lead OTs, lead PT/APE, and department head).

Assist PTs in preparing for and attending Eligibility and IEP meetings when needed; ensure availability of necessary resources and information for meaningful contribution to the eligibility/IEP process.

Participate in Eligibility and IEP meetings alongside PTs when additional support is required or when the assigned PT is unable to attend, ensuring continuity and comprehensive input in the development of the student's educational plan.

Attend ICC meetings and share relevant information with the OT/PT/APE department.

Review and update evaluation templates and departmental forms.

Assist in organizing professional development for the department.

Support staff in annual Goal Setting

Collaborate with PTs and APE teachers to establish clear, measurable, and achievable professional development goals aligned with district objectives. Utilize the SMART criteriaSpecific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-boundto ensure goals are well-defined and attainable.

Complete mid-year and end-of-year performance reviews:

Conduct thorough evaluations at mid-year and end-of-year intervals to assess progress toward established goals. Provide constructive feedback, acknowledge achievements, and identify areas for further development. These reviews serve as a basis for future goal setting and professional growth planning.

Documentation and Compliance:

Ensure all goal setting, observations, and performance reviews are accurately documented within the online Talent Ed system. Maintain compliance with district policies and timelines, facilitating transparency and accountability in the performance management process.

Additional Duties

Perform any other duties as assigned within the timeframe allotted

Qualifications

Doctoral degree in physical therapy, from an accredited university

Appropriate license as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Physical Therapy

Possession of or ability to obtain a National Provider Identification (NPI) number prior to employment

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of school based physical therapy services. 6+ years experience preferred

Excellent organizational, and oral and written communication skills

Multilingual communication skills highly regarded

Ability to work independently and to effectively handle multiple school assignments

Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's License and use of a personal vehicle
