A Reading Specialist plays a crucial role in school administration by employing their expertise in language acquisition and literacy development to enhance the reading skills of students and the instructional strategies of educators. They assess and diagnose reading difficulties, design and implement reading intervention programs, and provide professional development to staff members. Necessary skills include a deep knowledge of literacy development strategies, strong communication skills, the ability to design and implement effective reading programs, and the ability to work collaboratively with a team. Prior to becoming a Reading Specialist, an individual generally has experience in roles such as a Classroom Teacher, Literacy Coach, or Special Education Teacher. These roles provide the necessary classroom experience and foundational knowledge in educational theory and practice, which are crucial for success in the Reading Specialist role.
