Job Description:

Function of Position:

Reporting to the Director of Learning Support Systems, Academic Coaches are professional staff who work with students enrolled in MCC's Academic English Essentials course and accompanying lab (TRS 090 & 091) to help them to develop effective reading and learning strategies and become self-regulated learners. The role of the Embedded Academic Coach is to help the TRS-090/TRS-091 student improve academically by identifying strengths and areas for improvement and designing appropriate activities to improve learning. The Academic Coach is embedded directly into one or more sections of MCC's Academic English Essentials course and accompanying lab (TRS 090 & 091) to model best practices and serve as a liaison between faculty and students. Embedded Coaches are expected to collaborate effectively with their assigned instructor(s), to assist with and bolster in-class engagement. Embedded Coaches further provide supplemental support outside of class time to help students with discipline-specific content, learning strategies, time-management, and problem solving.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

Serve as model student and attend class regularly

Provide support in one or more sections of MCC's Academic English Essentials course and accompanying lab (TRS 090 & 091)

Actively engage with students both during and outside of class time

Foster the development of independent, intentional learners;

Provide one-on-one coaching related to academic success in TRS 090 course and accompanying TRS 091 lab

Help students understand and use effective reading and learning strategies

Provide assistance to students needing intensive study skills and reading help in a myriad of subjects

Help students identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding academic success

Help students focus on individual goals and identify steps to reaching those goals

Work with students to develop strong time management and organization

Develop with students individualized academic plans

Motivate students to take ownership of their own academic success

Refer students to other services on campus such as academic advising, personal counseling, career counseling, subject-specific tutoring, Single Stop, etc.

Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty

Attend training activities to comply with certification requirements before and/or during semesters

Combine "how to learn" with "what to learn," to facilitate student learning, help students better understand concepts or applications of course content, and promote higher order thinking and problem solving

Collaborate with TRS 090 091 teacher of record for ongoing student support and formative assessment reports

Adhere to tutoring center protocol and tutoring expectations as outlined in the Tutor Handbook

Assist students in the development of reading and learning strategies as well as note taking and study techniques

Secondary Functions:

Create direct connection to seek out further services in the TAAC to introduce students to Academic Coaching services

Assist with other learning assistance projects as needed and discussed with teacher of record

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in education, Reading and writing, Literacy, or comparable degree

Experience working with diverse college populations

Technology savvy

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Reading or Reading Education or comparable degree

Bachelor's degree in English, Composition, or comparable degree

Two years of developmental reading and writing teaching experience

Some tutoring experience

Additional Information:

Job Type: Part Time

Hours: 10-20 Hours per Week

Pay Rate:

Professional

Bachelor's Degree - $17/hr

Master's Degree - $19/hr

PhD - $21.00/hr

Adjunct - $25.00/hr (to qualify for adjunct pay rate, applicants must have at least one assigned course for the semester)
