QUALIFICATIONSMassachusetts DESE Licensure as a Special Education AdministratorPrefer experience as an Administrator of Special EducationTeaching experience in public education, preferably in the area of special educationKnowledge of state and federal regulations, laws and requirements for Special Education ServicesA minimum of a master's degree in an appropriate fieldAbility to work with parent and community-based groupsAbility to work effectively with principals', other administrators, and special education staff with regard to program implementationAbility to communicate orally and in writing with sensitivity and tact so as to interact with parents, students, and community membersSuch alternatives to the above as the Superintendent may find appropriate or acceptable.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establishes the special education process at their level in line with the district special education frameworkAccepts, collects, and coordinates all special education referralsChairs all initial and reevaluation meetings in addition to annual reviews as required by the Director of Student ServicesProvide leadership in the planning, maintenance and evaluation of the educational programs that meet the needs of studentsCoordinates/leads discussion and schedules all special education building department meetingsAttends regular consultation meetings with program teachers, therapists, psychologists, BCBAs, related service providers, outside consultants and others to discuss program components and student issuesCoordinates and conducts student observations in special education programs as neededIs responsible for the quality of the Individual Education Plans that are delivered to parents as well as ensuring the appropriate programming, goals, and service delivery for all special education students at their assigned levelsKeeps current on all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and best practices in the area of special education in MassachusettsResponsible for representing the needs and developing, modifying and maintaining special education department programming of the special education students at their assigned level in a fiscally responsible mannerMay act as or assist as a liaison for out of district or tuition-in students.Establishes and maintains good communication between Principals and special education departmentServes as a liaison between the Principals and the Director of Student ServicesShares responsibility with principals in the evaluation and supervision of special education instructional and non-instructional staff by conducting announced and unannounced observations in accordance with the model of educator evaluation and serves as a contributing evaluator supervisionModels and promotes best practices in special education teachingRecommends and assists with coordination of professional development for special education department staff (teachers, service providers and paraprofessional staff)Assist in the interviewing of candidates for instructional and non-instructional positionsMeets regularly with all program teachers and inclusion specialists to discuss student progress and challengesFacilitates summer services for special education extended year programming and provides site supervisionCommits district resourcesCarries out other duties as may be assigned
