Guidance Counselor

This position will provide advice and helpful resources to students regarding certain personal and academic situations. Their main duties include offering counseling to students or teachers, conducting group counseling sessions to help students develop their personal and academic skills and providing career advice and guidance to high school students.

Duties may include but not be limited to:

  • Oversee and fulfill a guidance program designed to allow students to voice concerns without fear of punishment or judgement
  • Analyze student performance in class and identify sources of problems
  • Get to know students and their unique needs to offer specialized solutions
  • Help students develop a plan for their academic career that corresponds with their skills and interests
  • Host crisis intervention and prevention programs
  • Facilitate communication between parents, teachers, administrators and students about behavior and academic problems
  • Assist with school programs and events
  • Maintains student guidance records and confidentiality
  • Provides career counseling to students as assigned
  • Makes recommendations to students for higher education and colleges for admission and scholarships
  • Make arrangements for alternative educational processes as needed
  • Identifies and evaluates critical data such as grades, test scores, attendance, promotion rates, graduation and postsecondary enrollment rate
  • Guides individuals and groups of students through the development of educational plans, career awareness and personal and social growth issues
  • Participates in a multi-disciplinary team staffing for students being considered for exceptional student education programs or for 504 accommodations
  • Assist building leadership with the preparation of a master schedule.
  • Assist building leadership with planning, coordinating and implementing state and local testing.
  • Guide students with the selection of courses that align to educational plans and lead to successful completion of a high school diploma.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal

Reports to: Building Principal

Work Period: 198 days/year

Qualifications: Master's degree program from approved school counselor program or if already degreed, completed additional coursework from an approved school counselor program.

Licensed or candidate to become licensed in school counseling

General office skills with computer knowledge.

Possession of the desire to help people learn and grow.

Physical/Mental Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held

Requirements: devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds
