Role Description
POSITION TITLE:
School Nurse
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred but not required
- One year's experience in an area related to the job's primary functions and major responsibilities is preferred
- Current CPR certification and instructor's card in First Aid (The instructor's card may be obtained immediately after employment.)
JOB GOAL:
To provide health education, health service to students, and maintain a climate of health and well-being to assigned schools.
REPORTS TO:
Director of Special Education
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for carrying out the Tarrant city Schools health program in assigned schools.
- Schedules and conducts screenings and assessments to detect problems in vision, hearing, and scoliosis. Documents and refers students with deficiencies in accordance with Departmental Regulations.
- Establishes and maintains contact with community agencies and clinics responsible for providing health care for students. Learns and stays familiar with their policies and procedures.
- Investigates referrals regarding individual health problems. Refers to appropriate agency for treatment. Follows up and submits any required reports.
- Serves as a health liaison between the home and the school relative to established health programs. Counsels with parents, teachers, and other health professionals regarding student health problems.
- Schedules and conducts home visits when appropriate.
- Works with principals and teachers to plan and carry out first aide and safety education programs within assigned schools.
- Trains and works with volunteers assisting in the Tarrant City Schools Health Program.
- Assists with staff development of school staff through workshops, institutes, faculty meetings, and individual conferences.
- Prepares and makes presentations regarding the school nursing program to school and community organizations such as PTA, Clubs, Civic Organizations, etc. Participate in school in-service training programs as requested.
- Advises and assists teachers in obtaining materials and resources to enhance school education programs.
- Assists in carrying out policies and procedures for control of communicable diseases within assigned schools. Conducts inspections and evaluations.
- Attends professional meetings for professional development, according to established board policy.
- Maintains required records. Complies and submits periodic reports and evaluations regarding the status of program within assigned schools.
- Assists with enforcement of the regulations for mandatory immunizations as published by the Alabama Department of Public Health.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Principal or the designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
EVALUATION:
Nine-month position in accordance with the Board's salary schedule.
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Tarrant city Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
This is an exempt position.
