Position Summary: Dean & Master Teacher
The Dean occupies a unique "player-coach" role within the academy, serving as both an exemplary classroom instructor and a guardian of school culture. This leader is responsible for teaching three courses, ensuring that the classical tradition is modeled with excellence for students and colleagues alike. Beyond the classroom, the Dean oversees student life, facilitates character formation through humane discipline, and provides regular instructional coaching to faculty.
Core Pillars
- Instructional Excellence: Modeling classical pedagogy (Socratic dialogue, narration, and primary source engagement) in their own three-course teaching load.
- Formative Discipline: Guiding students toward self-governance and virtue, ensuring discipline is a tool for moral growth rather than mere compliance.
- Faculty Coaching: Observing and mentoring teachers to refine their classroom management and classical instructional techniques.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in a liberal arts discipline required; Master's degree preferred.
- Certification: State teaching license or a clear path to licensure.
- Experience:
- 3-5+ years of successful classroom teaching in a classical or similar environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and influence peers through coaching or mentorship.
- Proven experience in managing student behavior with a focus on character development.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Content Mastery: Advanced knowledge in the subject areas taught (typically Humanities, Math, or Science).
- Classical Vision: The ability to articulate and defend the "why" behind classical methods and Charlotte Mason's philosophy.
- Coaching Aptitude: Skills in providing targeted, constructive feedback to teachers to improve their "craft of teaching".
- Relational Authority: The ability to command respect through wisdom and virtue, fostering a "culture of peace" on campus.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Teaching (40-50%): Teach a regular schedule of three courses, maintaining high standards for student work and intellectual curiosity.
- Culture & Discipline:
- Implement campus-wide discipline procedures focused on moral character.
- Oversee unstructured times (lunch, passing periods, and car-line) to maintain a well-ordered environment.
- Act as the primary liaison for parents regarding conduct and character concerns.
- Teacher Development:
- Conduct regular classroom observations and coaching cycles for assigned faculty.
- Lead grade-level or department meetings to ensure instructional coherence across the curriculum.
- Administrative Support:
- Assist the Headmaster or Assistant Headmaster in planning student events, retreats, and "learning celebrations".
- Serve on the school leadership team to help shape policies and cast the school's vision.
Physical / Environmental Factors
- Must be able to maintain high visibility throughout the school day, including active supervision during outdoor recesses and car-lines.
