POSITION: Assistant Principal/ Athletic Director (County-wide Secondary Schools)

LOCATION:

  • Pocahontas County High School (Assistant Principal / Athletic Director)
  • Green Bank Elementary-Middle School and Marlinton Middle School (Assistant Principal / Athletic Director)

Length of Employment: 225 days. The daily schedule will be flexible in structure to align with athletic and supervision needs, and will be developed in coordination with, and approved by, the school principals.

SUPERVISOR: School Principals (Pocahontas County High School, Green Bank Elementary Middle School, Marlinton Middle School)

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Superintendent and in accordance with WV State Code 18A-3C-2, WV State Board Policy 5310, and Pocahontas County Schools Policy 1530.01

CERTIFICATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants shall possess:

  • WV Professional Administrative Certificate pursuant to WV Code 18A-3-2a
  • Endorsement as Principal (required)
  • Degree in athletic or educational administration preferred
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18A-3-10
  • Knowledge/experience with athletic programs and WVSSAC rules and regulations
  • Additional Minimum Requirements: Applicants who have recent unsatisfactory evaluations will not be considered eligible for consideration; applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration; and, applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
  • Additional Minimum Requirements for Applicants Not Currently Employed: Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.
  • Cannot be a coach in any sport

Preferred Additional Qualifications/Experience:

  • Secondary Level Principal / Administrative experience preferred (3+ years)
  • Successful experience as a teacher
  • Knowledge of the WV Standards for High Quality Schools (WV Code 18A-2-9)
  • Knowledge of the school accreditation process (WV Code 18A-2-9)
  • Knowledge of strategic planning for continuing improvement (WV Code 18A-2-9)
  • Knowledge/experience with budgeting and management of extra-curricular activities

Job Summary:

The Assistant Principal/Athletics Director provides leadership, supervision, and coordination for all interscholastic athletic programs while promoting academic achievement, sportsmanship, student safety, fiscal responsibility, and compliance with all applicable laws, policies, and regulations.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Athletic Transportation Coordination

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate athletic transportation scheduling in collaboration with district transportation personnel.
  • Ensure transportation requests are submitted accurately and within established timelines.
  • Monitor travel logistics for athletic teams, including departure schedules, supervision plans, and trip documentation.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with district transportation policies, student supervision expectations, and safety requirements.
  • Coordinate contingency plans for transportation delays, weather-related issues, or schedule adjustments.

Student Athlete Oversight

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure student eligibility compliance
  • Monitor academic eligibility requirements
  • Promote student attendance, behavior, and academic success
  • Ensure proper concussion protocols and medical clearances
  • Coordinate athletic physicals and participation documentation
  • Ensure equitable opportunities for all students

WVSSAC & Legal Compliance

West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Responsibilities:

  • Maintain compliance with all WVSSAC rules and regulations

  • Work with county Coordinator of Personnel to ensure coaches maintain required certifications and training.

  • Collaborate with county Title IX Director to ensure compliance with Title IX requirements

Budget & Financial Management

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage athletic budgets
  • Oversee athletic purchasing and procurement
  • Ensure proper handling of gate receipts and fundraising funds
  • Approve equipment and uniform purchases
  • Maintain inventory of athletic equipment
  • Ensure fiscal accountability and internal controls
  • Coordinate fundraising activities in accordance with board policy

Event Management

Operational responsibilities:

  • Coordinate game management and event supervision
  • Arrange officials, security, medical coverage, and transportation
  • Supervise crowd control and spectator conduct

Communication & Public Relations

  • Serve as liaison between school administration, coaches, parents, boosters, media, and community

Program Leadership & Supervision

Responsibilities:

  • Promote sportsmanship, character development, and student leadership

Social Media Expectations for Coaches/Programs

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, communicate, and enforce expectations for appropriate social media use by coaches, sponsors, and athletic programs.
  • Ensure all athletic social media communications reflect professionalism, sportsmanship, student privacy protection, and district values.
  • Monitor athletic program digital communications for compliance with district policy, WVSSAC expectations, and student conduct standards.
  • Provide training and guidance to coaches regarding responsible online conduct and public communication.
  • Coordinate timely dissemination of athletic information, schedules, cancellations, and program achievements through approved communication channels.

NIL Awareness (College Recruiting Environment)

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain awareness of evolving Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) issues impacting student-athletes and athletic programs.
  • Provide educational support to coaches, students, and families regarding NCAA recruiting guidelines, eligibility considerations, and NIL-related risks.
  • Coordinate with counselors and administrators to ensure recruiting activities comply with district policy and applicable athletic association regulations.
  • Promote ethical recruiting awareness and protect student-athletes from exploitation or improper outside influence.
