Position Overview
The Academic Advisor for Online, Evening, and Weekend Students serves as a dedicated academic counselor and champion for non-traditional student success. This position provides comprehensive, proactive academic advising, career development guidance, and holistic support to ensure retention and timely graduation. Because this role primarily serves adult learners, working professionals, and remote students, it requires a high degree of flexibility, tech-savviness, and an understanding of the unique challenges faced by students balancing education with life, work, and family commitments.
Key Responsibilities
Holistic Academic Counseling & Planning
- Partner with students to develop, evaluate, and update individualized academic plans of study, ensuring clear pathways to graduation.
- Advise, and process incoming students for general studies competency; evaluate admissions applications, transcripts, placement test scores, and transfer credits to ensure accurate curriculum placement.
- Advise students on course selection, sequencing, curriculum/concentration changes, and transition issues; facilitate seamless registration, course additions, and withdrawals.
- Monitoring & Retention: Proactively monitor student academic progress, identify students in distress, and coordinate with faculty regarding early alerts to implement timely intervention strategies.
- Support Referrals: Connect students with institutional resources, including developmental education, tutoring, financial aid, and disability services.
Academic Development & Student Success Coaching
- Teach specialized student success or life skills courses functions tailored to navigating higher education as an adult or online learner.
- Participate in and facilitate new student orientations, academic informational sessions, and success workshops specifically designed for evening, weekend, and online formats.
Program Administration & Grant Reporting
- Collect data on advising appointments through Navigate regarding student participation, retention, and performance to meet reporting requirements.
- Maintain accurate, secure, and up-to-date digital student files and documentation in Navigate.
- Coordinate program publicity by preparing flyers, digital newsletter copy, and informational materials aimed at non-traditional student populations.
- Assist with daily operational duties, including scheduling appointments, answering inquiries, managing correspondence, and coordinating the activities of assigned work-study students.
Collaboration & Institutional Engagement
- Liaise with Admissions, Financial Aid, Career Services, and specially funded programs to streamline the non-traditional student experience.
- Represent the interests of online, evening, and weekend students on campus committees, attend institutional meetings, and participate in campus events.
Professional Development
- Maintain a working knowledge of current research, best practices, and emerging trends in online pedagogy, adult learning theory, and academic advising.
- Stay current on all applicable institutional, state, and federal laws/regulations (e.g., FERPA).
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education Administration, or a closely related field.
- Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proven experience supporting online learners, adult student populations, or non-traditional students.
- Proficiency with higher education technology platforms (e.g., Student Information Systems, CRM tools, LMS platforms like Canvas/Blackboard, and degree audit software).
- Strong intercultural communication skills and a deep commitment to student equity, access, and inclusion.
Special Requirements & Work Schedule
To effectively meet the needs of the student population served, this position requires a non-traditional work schedule:
- Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM.
- Modality: Must be comfortable delivering high-quality counseling and instruction via face-to-face, virtual (Zoom/Teams), phone, and asynchronous formats.

Compensation: $70,929.00/annual
